Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.unc.edu) is one of six health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Social Work, Public Health, Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is one of the oldest health science academic programs at Chapel Hill. The School teaches approximately 600 PharmD students and 145 graduate students. The School has built a reputation for its continued pursuit of excellence, rigorous education and training programs, cutting-edge multidisciplinary research, progressive pharmacy practices, efficient business operations, and its outstanding faculty, staff, and students. Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is seeking a highly qualified professional for the Assistant Director of Faculty Employment. The incumbent will oversee a range of faculty personnel matters (both tenure-track and fixed-term), including initial appointments, reappointments, promotions, end-of-appointments, phased retirements, administrative appointments, and Distinguished Professorships. Serving as the School’s expert on faculty personnel policies and procedures, the successful candidate must possess a strong ability to research, interpret, and apply policies to diverse situations.
In addition to these responsibilities, the role involves being the School’s local resource on the tenure and faculty code, necessitating the analysis of situations and providing consultation and advice to Chairs, Executive Vice Dean/Chief Academic Officer, Senior Director of HR and Engagement, and other stakeholders in faculty personnel actions. The incumbent will play a crucial role in aligning faculty personnel decisions with the strategic direction of the School. The position also entails overseeing the preparation of comprehensive faculty appointment packages, ensuring completeness and accuracy in documentation. The ideal candidate will provide timely and accurate consultation and demonstrate expertise by developing, designing, and preparing reports on faculty salaries for key stakeholders, including the Dean, Executive Vice Dean/Chief Academic Officer, Executive Vice Dean/Chief Operations Officer, Senior Director of HR and Engagement, and Executive Director of Finance and Facilities. Additionally, the selected candidate will serve as the HR liaison to the School Full Professor Committee, further contributing to the School’s commitment to academic excellence and faculty support.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The position requires a high level of organization, strong attention to detail, discretion, and an ability to adapt easily, follow through, complete tasks and resolving a myriad of complex issues. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills required. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required. Successful applicants will demonstrate a positive, highly professional and customer oriented focus in the workplace. Strong influencing and negotiating skills and the ability to exercise independent judgement. Experience in cross-departmental and inter-team collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Prior experience in UNC System in HR, faculty affairs and/or personnel, strongly preferred with preference to experience specific to UNC Chapel Hill
- Three years or greater of professional level human resources experience in an academic setting; specifically with faculty appointment, reappointment, tenure and other personnel actions
- Knowledge of UNC policies, business processes and systems (ConnectCarolina, PeopleAdmin)
