Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Law Distance Education is an integral part of two offices within Law school – International & Graduate Programs and Student Life. Supports the financial and registrar functions of the online academic programs; prepares financial reports for various Law School departments; supports the online and residential student population as an advocate regarding their access and utilization of all financial aid resources; assists with administering federal and institutional funding to ensure compliance. Works closely with the Admission Department and the University’s Financial Aid Office.


Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Counsels online students and family members on financial aid programs; explains policies, procedures, and provides appropriate documentation. Provides guidance and counsel to existing online students regarding course planning and curriculum. Ensures students feel comfortable with their course trajectory and progress towards degree completion. Helps troubleshoot student tech issues.
  • Facilitates registration for online students in Slate by manually adding/dropping students from classes, revising tuition, and remission. Set-up online courses in WUCRSL to be followed-up with evaluations after each term.  
  • Ensures financial aid is awarded to eligible online students, at the correct amounts, and by regulatory and institutional deadlines. Verifies student enrollment and adjust student budgets and awards accordingly. Coordinates VA benefits as needed.
  • Monitors and reports online tuition enrollment deposits and monthly A/R, interact with students regarding payments, confirm teaching agreements every term to submit for payment, and attend regular operations meetings monthly or as needed.  
  • Monitors and reports student status including lock-out reports and degree status.
  • Verifies student academic progress; refers unsatisfactory changes in students’ academic progress to supervisor. Works with Registrar to maintain student records. This includes ensuring applications for all students are complete. 
  • Assists Director of Financial Aid and Student Life with developing, implementing and revising policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal and institutional policies related to financial aid and scholarship. Also, assists the Registrar to ensure compliance with policies related to academics.
  • Participates in outreach activities, such as New Student Orientation, Financial Aid Workshops, and Immersion weekend. Provides leadership, supervision, and programming in the area of student organizations. Provides guidance to students with disabilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, for example, LOA processing, working on wind down with tech partner 2U, scholarship processing, immersion planning and graduation processing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with federal financial aid regulations and procedures.
  • Experience with online education programs.
  • Experience working with students.
  • Experience in higher education and/or knowledge of fund accounting. 
  • Undergraduate degree in accounting.
  • Washington University financial systems experience, particularly SIS, FIS slate and workday.
  • Experience working with personal computers and financial accounting systems; proficiency in spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, written and verbal; a service-oriented communicator who is a true team player.
  • Self-motivated individual driven by challenge with the ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines with varying degrees of pressure; ability to exercise judgment and take corrective action.
  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly. 
  • Good organizational, coordination, spelling, grammar skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with solid ability to exercise discretion and maintain high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to successfully communicate with students in a timely manner.
  • Skilled and competent in Microsoft Word and Excel.



Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and minimum of five years’ of experience in accounting or student information systems in a complex university or business environment.

Salary Range
$52,000.00 - $88,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
