Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
The Assistant Director provides effective leadership to the custodial services units that are responsible for the regular care and cleaning of approximately 2.1 million gross square feet of residence hall space with a budget of over $2 million on the Columbia campus of the University of South Carolina. This position has been designated as essential personnel during inclement/hazardous weather and other emergencies.
Primary Responsibilities –
  • Oversee the planning, development, and execution of strategies to accomplish the Custodial Department mission.
  • Develops and implements systems and processes to establish and maintain operations data.
  • Determine requirements for personnel, supplies, materials, and equipment, monitor expenditures to ensure consistency with departmental objectives and compliance with established budgets.
  • Monitor and evaluate personnel to ensure project completion, technical accuracy and compliance with code requirements, and adherence to departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs and safety standards. Implement a comprehensive custodial quality assurance program.
  • Develop and implement performance measurement tools to accurately assess effectiveness of service delivery. Provides direction, management, and supervision to ensure compliance with federal state and local codes and regulations.
  • Recommend improvements and enhancements to existing processes, procedures, and policies in the spirit of continuous improvement while meeting federal, state, and local mandates.
  • Provide a high level of service to both internal and external customers and ensure the Universities KPI’s are being met. Respond to all emails, phone calls, and requests within 24 hours. If a request cannot be met within 24 hours, work with the requester on a timeframe that will satisfy the need.
  • Work closely and correspond with other departments in the Division of Student Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications
An associate’s degree and 7 years professional experience directly related to the area of employment, or high school diploma and 9 years related experience.
Valid driver’s license required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
This position requires a thorough knowledge of the custodial services business operations, with emphasis in safety practices as it pertains to relevant areas of employment. Knowledge of business management practices, personnel management, planning, problem solving, and conflict resolution are essential. Computer literacy required.

Performs inspections of assigned buildings by walking through and observing interiors of buildings in order to review the inspection work of the supervisors and actual work of employees, gather information for developing work orders that are used by maintenance, warehouse/moving or custodial staff, communicate with customers, check on the need for replacement fire extinguishers, report safety concerns, meet with building liaisons, and provide a visible custodial management presence to staff, students, parents, and visitors.

Directs and manages the custodial operations for approximately 2.1 million gross square feet of residence hall space on the Columbia campus at the University of South Carolina by communicating with customers regarding their issues and concerns; delivering cost competitive in-house services; conducting comparative cost surveys with the private sector delivering equivalent services; developing quality assurance practices to evaluate and maintain service, quality and assignment of work; overseeing the hiring of new staff; assisting in the creation of and communicating vision and goals; meeting with other management personnel and/or employees to resolve problems, address concerns, provide information; identifying anticipated needs for equipment, materials, and personnel; and ensuring the successful accomplishment of work plans for efficient resource use and responsive support.
