Position Description:  Apply
The Department of Music at Cornell University invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Choral Music. The full-time (with benefits), non-renewable appointment at the rank of Lecturer (non-tenure-track) will last three years, commencing on July 1, 2023.

Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in music or equivalent professional credentials. The successful candidate will be expected to assist the Director of Choral Music in all aspects of Cornell’s nationally renowned choral program: teaching, conducting, and administration. The assistant director will be eager to work effectively with engaged students from a wide range of musical backgrounds and to contribute thoughtfully to the public role of music at Cornell University. Outstanding rehearsal and pedagogical skills are the top qualifications, and will ideally be matched with professional vocal experience and strong keyboard accompanying skills.

Specific duties of the position will include serving as principal conductor for the Cornell Chorale and sharing conducting duties for the Glee Club, Chorus, and Chamber Singers; assisting in the administration of the choral program, including support for tours, festivals, and collaborations; and participating in other departmental, college, and university activities, as determined by availability and the successful candidate’s talents and interests.

Cornell’s choirs maintain a lively schedule of performing, touring, and recording, with some 40 performances annually. Regular collaborations with professional organizations (the American Symphony Orchestra, the Argento Chamber Ensemble, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, etc.) and multiple annual commissions (from composers such as Augusta Read Thomas, Roberto Sierra, Bernard Rands, Lisa Bielawa, Toby Twining, Christopher Cerrone, Chen Yi, etc.) keep the choirs at the forefront of current performance practice.

Applicants are requested to apply online at AcademicJobsOnline with a letter of application, curriculum vitae, Statement of Contribution to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (on which see https://facultydevelopment.cornell.edu/information-for-faculty-candidates/ ), three unedited video excerpts total of choral rehearsal and performance (camera facing conductor, maximum 10 minutes each, preferably contrasting styles), and three current letters of recommendation. Please do not send any additional materials until requested to do so. Any letters of recommendation that must be sent in hard copy may be sent to:
