Position Focus:

The Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs and Development serves as a key member of the Yale School of Architecture leadership staff. The Yale School of Architecture is a dynamic community of 225 students and a faculty of award-winning architect-educators committed to improving the world through design and offering solutions to issues of climate change, social justice, and health through research and innovation in the built environment. The Alumni have a strong bond and a growing interest in engagement with the school. Fund raising efforts focus on scholarship, faculty support, and programs.

The Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs and Development reports to the Yale School of Architecture Senior Director of Development and Alumni Affairs. As a collaborative team, they plan, organize, and implement the school’s comprehensive fundraising and alumni engagement program. The successful candidate will provide high-level writing, strategic thinking, and coordination to enhance the school’s outreach efforts. The candidate will be a skilled relationship builder with superior communication skills who will inspire trust and collaboration with senior leadership, faculty, and colleagues across the School and Yale and build strong ties with alumni and friends.

Principal responsibilities include the following: Administer the school’s annual fund programs, including goal setting, volunteer recruitment and communication, and drafting and facilitating solicitations. Support the school’s major gift efforts, serving as a partner for the Senior Director in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift donors. Provide prospect strategy and implementation, report generation, and research. Manage a portfolio of 20-50 prospects. Create written and graphic materials for development and alumni affairs purposes. Recruit, train, and manage a system of alumni volunteers. Assist with the school’s stewardship efforts. Provide support for corporation and foundation proposals. Plan and coordinate alumni and donor events, both on and off campus.

Note: Occasional Evening and Weekend Hours Required.


Essential Duties

1. Administer the school’s annual fund programs, including goal setting, volunteer recruitment and communication, and facilitating solicitations.  2. Support the school’s major gift efforts in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift donors.  Provide support with prospect strategy design and implementation, report generation, and use of information systems.  3. Create materials for use in fundraising activities.  4. Recruit, train, and manage a system of alumni volunteers.  5. Assist with the school’s stewardship efforts.  6. Provide pre-award support for corporation and foundation proposals.  7. Plan and coordinate alumni and donor events.8. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree required. Four years of related experience in fundraising, alumni relations and/or volunteer groups, communications and/or marketing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, editing, and analytical skills.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to work independently and as part of a team, effectively partnering with colleagues and administrators to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to work well in and foster a team environment.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, data exports and queries, sorting and manipulation of Excel worksheets.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Outgoing personality and ability to initiate and enjoy direct communication with alumni, top- level donors, and Yale administrators, as well as students and alumni volunteers. Customer- service orientation. Professionalism, maturity, and an ability to maintain confidentiality.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated organizational and research abilities with strong attention to detail.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience in a university setting or with development and alumni work. Knowledge of and proficiency in annual campaign fundraising strategies and techniques. A genuine passion for the mission of Yale, the School of Architecture, and for the importance of architecture, design, and/or higher education.
