Assistant Director, New Student Orientation

We are seeking an Assistant Director, New Student Orientation (NSO) who will be responsible for ensuring the successful arrival and transition of undergraduate first-year students, transfer students, and their families to the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Homewood community through programming and strong partnerships across campus. As a university wide initiative, NSO serves as an important milestone in students’ time at JHU and aims to create a smooth transition and early affinity to the institution. This position reports to the Executive Director of Student Transitions and Family Engagement (ST+FE). Evening and weekend hours are expected during peak seasons.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Program Development and Delivery.
  • Design and implement a NSO schedule, including both summer onboarding and orientation week to reflect the needs of incoming Hopkins students as part of their transition to the JHU Homewood community.
  • Coordinate pre-orientation programs, overseeing program offerings, budget/funding models, registration, staffing, marketing, and communications to ensure consistency of messaging and a smooth experience.
  • Collaborate strategically and visibly with leadership and key campus partners to ensure well-rounded academic, co-curricular, and social offerings and programming that emphasizes social and emotional well-being; includes relevant educational content and resources; highlights civic engagement; and addresses academic rigor and success while introducing students to the incredible community they are joining.
  • As part of the ST+FE portfolio, collaborate with the Assistant Director of First-Year Experience (FYE) and Assistant Director of Family Engagement (FE) to ensure a smooth, welcoming, family-focused move-in process for all incoming students as part of the start of NSO.
  • Collaborate with University Events to include Convocation as the signature bookend event to NSO.
  • Help develop supplemental orientation programming specifically designed for special populations, in collaboration with campus partners such as Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Participate on the First-Year Experience Committee as a member.
  • Stand up an NSO student advisory board to help understand the new student experience and to learn ways to improve NSO for incoming students.
  • Serve on Fall Onboarding Working Group to ensure collaborative coordination efforts with key campus partners involved in welcoming, onboarding, and arrival of incoming students and families.
  • Co-create the new student brochure, a hard copy publication mailed to students in the late spring following matriculation.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of the NSO website as an engaging information hub for all new students, updating content and links regularly.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of the public, student facing NSO schedule.
  • Develop and conduct comprehensive assessment of NSO, sharing recommendations and insight with the FYE Committee and leadership, and to inform future iterations of the NSO program.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities such as conferences relevant to NSO.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Budget

  • Manage the NSO budget by preparing annual budget requests, tracking and reconciling expenditures and revenues, and monitoring for budget constraints and discrepancies.
  • Manage p-card, including making purchases, reviewing, tracking, and reconciling monthly expenses, staying current with p-card requirements.

Supervision

  • Co-supervise the Logistics Coordinator, who coordinates and manages all program operations and logistics within ST+FE.
  • Hire, train, and supervise up to four undergraduate students, who comprise the NSO Core Team and help plan and implement NSO.

  • Knowledge of the educational role and philosophy of experiential learning; understanding of student development theory and practices, including student transition issues.

  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint required.
  • Knowledge of Web authoring, desktop publishing, and Outlook a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree.
  • Three years of related experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
