Position Summary:
The Research Translation Group (RTG) at Beall Applied Innovation serves as a liaison for faculty and staff across all UCI departments to assist in developing strong alliances with industry for the benefit of technology translation and the evaluation of portfolio inventions. Extensive interaction is required with industry partners, campus researchers, senior campus administrators, patent and contract attorneys, industrial scientists, senior business development executives, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists. The Research Translation Group is the technology transfer function for UCI focused on invention disclosure patent administration, and licensing activities. RTG emphasizes accessibility, timeliness, and flexibility in its operations and negotiations to ensure that the federal, state, and private investment in UCI research has the greatest possible positive impact on people and the economy for broad public benefit.
Reporting to the Director, Research Translation Group, the Assistant Director of Licensing, Life Sciences role is for a full-time licensing professional who manages a portfolio of intellectual property in biomedical and life sciences and manages the Life Science licensing team. The position requires interactions with faculty members, including clinical investigators and academic research scientists working at the UC Irvine Medical Center and on the university's main campus. The Assistant Director of Life Sciences Licensing will independently manage inventions at various stages of development, from conception to commercialization. Responsibilities include building productive relationships with faculty through communication and outreach, assessing technologies for patentability and commercialization, managing of the patent process, developing commercialization strategies, negotiating and monitoring license agreements, and drafting and executing non-disclosure, letter agreements, options, exclusive and non-exclusive licenses and other IP related agreements. This position requires a strong background in the medical sciences and frequent interactions with professionals in the academic, legal, financial, and business communities.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $160,000.00 - $180,000.00 (Annual Salary). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $123,500.00 - $241,900.00 (Annual Salary).
Required:

  • Minimum of five years experience working in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industries, technology transfer, or commensurate combination of education and experience
  • Five or more years of experience in technology licensing, including negotiating terms and conditions in intellectual property contracts and executing license agreements.
  • Previous supervision and mentoring experience.
  • Previous experience in identifying, assessing, and commercializing new medical or life science technologies.
  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in research or business area
  • Ability to clearly communicate matters of law, policy, and science to multiple constituencies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other offices both internal and external to the University.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to direct work of professional staff.
  • Ability to stay abreast of national and international developments in the management of IP license and research agreements.
  • Advanced ability to independently exercise sound judgment and decision-making, creativity, problem-solving, and critical analysis
  • Knowledge of the medical sciences as evidenced by an advanced post-graduate degree in biomedical sciences, including research and technical experience
  • Self-starter able to manage a complex portfolio of diverse technologies; multi-tasking skills are essential.
  • Skills in market research, projection and valuation methods.
  • Familiar with accessing information from databases and accessing market and company information.
  • Current knowledge of trends in pharmaceutical and medical device business sectors.
  • Familiarity with patent law and the role of intellectual property in business practices.

Preferred:
  • Familiarity with university guidelines and policies related to intellectual property and licensing.
