Assistant Director, LGBTQ+ & Identity Programs

The Assistant Director, LGBTQ+ & Identity Programs assists in the creation and execution of innovative student programs and services designed to create a more inclusive campus environment. Specifically responsible for implementing and promoting departmental programs and initiatives; working collaboratively to assist in the establishment of policies and procedures that help create an inclusive and supportive campus environment; partnering in the delivery of support services focused on personal and academic success for under-represented student populations; mentoring and advising students, clubs, organizations, and student leaders to promote and foster an inclusive campus environment that prepares students to enter a diverse global marketplace; and building affinity for the Babson student experience by celebrating the many identities of the campus community.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Collaborate in the development and delivery of support programs and resources for under-represented student populations focused on overall student success. Co-chair the LGBTQ+ Working Group composed of faculty, staff, and students, whose mission is to develop a strategy for addressing campus climate issues and fostering a safer and more inclusive community for LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Advise, counsel, and support students on academic and community matters and refer when necessary; partner in the development of strategies that directly address trends and challenges for under-represented students; respond to community members and serve as a case manager for students impacted by bias or climate-related incidents and develop appropriate responses with regards to messaging, outreach, and processing spaces.
  • Serve as a primary advisor to clubs and organizations with missions focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or multiculturalism; assist with training student organizations and student leaders on diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or topics related to multiculturalism; serve as a resource to student organizations in developing inclusive activities; foster the development of new student organizations with a mission focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or multiculturalism; assist student leaders and organization advisers in programming activities that promote diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion; co-advise the Multicultural Leadership Council.
  • Direct planning, design, and execution of major campus celebrations including but not limited to Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, Autism Awareness Month, Native American and Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month, National Coming Out Day and Trans Awareness week. Partner with student organizations in the development of programs that enhance the student experience and amplifies the presence of the many identities represented at the College.
  • Manage the student leader life cycle of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Leaders including marketing, recruitment, hiring, on-boarding, and co-supervision; responsible for developing a training curriculum designed to prepare student leaders for facilitation, bias and climate response, community building, and intentional program design and implementation; manage budget allocated to support the JEDI leadership program.
  • Assist the Director of MIP and Associate Dean of Students in the development and facilitation of campus-wide training that advances institutional diversity and reinforces the common set of competencies for diversity, equity, and inclusion work; trainings include new student orientations, leadership development workshops (i.e., Resident Assistants, Peer Mentors, Peers On Wellness, JEDI Leaders, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Athletes, etc.), Babson Leadership Academy, and other student club and organization leadership training; coordinate LGBTQ+ workshops and trainings for enrolled students and student organizations including Safe Zone and other effective ally training.
  • Manage administrative coordination and execution of signature campus events including but not limited to Multicultural Festival, LGBTQ+ & Allies Welcome Reception, and Lavender Graduation Celebration; partner with key campus partners, specifically the Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving Office and College faculty in the planning and design of these programs; gather input from students to enhance the impact of these events in building affinity and making meaning of their Babson experience.
  • Collaborate with Babson alumni, specifically with the LGBTQ+ Affinity Group, to assist students in making meaningful connections with alumni; support alumni events and initiatives that focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or multiculturalism that directly relate to enhancing the student experience; manage the Alumni Mentor Connections Program, facilitating connections between LGBTQ+ and Diversity Leadership Scholars with their alumni counterparts; and organize engagement and leadership development programming and coordinate assessment processes to evaluate learning outcomes.
  • Provide indirect supervision and direct oversight for the Multicultural and Identity Programs Graduate Assistant; evaluate and provide feedback regarding professional development and job performance.
  • Create and maintain Multicultural Programs’ collateral materials; maintain Multicultural Programs’ event-related email communication, website, Hub, and social media.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as required.

WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED

Bachelor’s Degree

A minimum of 4-6 years of related experience on a college campus including demonstrated experience working with multiple diverse populations and developing innovative programs for underrepresented populations.

Knowledge of student development theory, program development, management, and evaluation.

Knowledge of student group advisement and organizational development; student and staff training development; student leadership program development; student development theory; knowledge of college policies, conduct processes and legal issues in higher education.

Knowledge of current trends in student diversity and inclusion, particularly in regard to higher education.

Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, administration, staff, parents and alumni.

Must have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate in a cross-cultural environment with sensitivity to the complexity of diverse student issues and concerns.

Ability to envision and propose new methods to perform tasks that support ET&A; work independently to solve problems; look for opportunities to take on responsibility; take thoughtful risks; and accept new and ongoing initiatives, objectives, and solutions to gain sought-after results.

Ability to anticipate and embrace change; demonstrate willingness to achieve, acquire, and utilize new skills and challenging tasks; and is flexible in changing conditions.

Must have strong computer skills including proficiency in Google Drive/Docs and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook/Calendar).

Must have strong organizational skills and project management skills with the ability to appropriately prioritize tasks and adjust to changing priorities.

Experience working in an advising capacity with student groups and individual students.

HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK

Requires work onsite a minimum of 3 days a week; the on-campus requirement is subject to modification based on organizational need. 

Regular evening and weekend work required
