Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Leadership, University Center

The University of Montana invites applications for an Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Leadership for the University Center. In this position you will design and implement leadership development and learning programs, fun and engaging events that enhance the student experience, and developing and implementing activities and services which supplement the academic program of the University. You will provide advice and resources to students and student organizations, interpret and enforce University policy for fraternity and sorority life and student organizations, plan campus-wide events, participate in long-range planning and implementation of programs by the University Center, and assume other responsibilities as directed by the University Center Associate Director.

You will support, empower, and engage students and will implement programming that creates and sustains an inclusive and supportive campus climate for all students at the University of Montana. 

This position is a student-centered leader who models inclusion, community, and belonging as fundamental to fulfilling the University’s mission and building institutional excellence.

Reporting to the University Center Associate Director for Student Life, you will operate under general supervision expressed in terms of program goals and objectives, priorities, and deadlines. In communication and consultation as needed, the Assistant Director will provide interpretation and establish methods to perform overall program or project objectives and management of available resources. The position oversees the programs and activities within the Campus Activities Board, UC Art Gallery, and Fraternity and Sorority Involvement.

Position duties include four main areas, but are not limited to:

General:

  • Advise and coach students and student groups about various aspects of programming and event planning.
  • Apply knowledge on the current trends and issues within student affairs, college programs, and risk management as it relates to events on campus and student behavior.
  • Work with a diverse professional campus population (students, faculty, and administrators).
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing as demonstrated by the ability to draft professional letters, emails, and reports, and present to the public, students, staff, administrators, and staff.
  • This position will require a person who is willing and able to work beyond the typical 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. schedule as many student programs held in the late afternoon and/or evening after classes have ended.
  • Collaborate as a member of the Student Life Team which includes: The Branch Center, UC Art Gallery, FSI, Gaming Den and Campus Activities Board.
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses.
  • Support the overall operation of the University Center and contribute to the department’s success by performing all other duties as assigned.

Fraternity and Sorority Involvement:

  • Promote a positive profile of the fraternity and sorority community by providing overall advisement, training, and support of the recognized social fraternities and sororities on campus.
  • Assists in establishing and/or maintaining the position of the fraternity and sorority community within the collegiate environment by ensuring their understanding of and compliance with all University policies, UM Community Standards, Mutual Agreement, as well as municipal, state, and federal laws.

Campus Activities Board:

  • Apply experience and knowledge in developing, implementing, and assessing a robust array of campus programs and activities intentionally designed to enhance the educational experience and success of students outside of the classroom.
  • Manage and coordinate multiple student events at one time.
  • Manage financial resources from UM Student fees and UC annual budget, within budget limits, in accordance with University policies.

UC Art Gallery:

  • Is the point person for scheduling of gallery attendance (students), artists exhibiting, and groups wishing to visit the UC Gallery.
  • Oversight of gallery attendants/artists with the hang/display artists’ work within the gallery space including but not limited to the need to be on ladders, move podiums, spackle in nail holes and paint.

Position Details
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
  • Salary for this position is $52,000- $56,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.
  • This position will require a person who is willing and able to work beyond the typical 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. schedule as many student programs held in the late afternoon and/or evening after classes have ended.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience and knowledge in developing, implementing, and assessing a robust array of campus programs and activities intentionally designed to enhance the educational experience and success of students outside of the classroom
  • Demonstrated experience event planning, risk management, and measuring student participation outcomes
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills working with students and student groups
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively advocate for students while maintaining a collaborative and supportive relationship with colleagues and the institution
  • Demonstrated administrative skills (Budget oversight, interpretation and application of policies and protocols etc.)
  • Expertise in and an appreciation for evidence-based and research-informed theory and best practices regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion, and strategies for removing barriers to inclusive learning environments
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, track and analyze data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to build a network of partners and supporters
  • Team-oriented and open to ideas and input from colleagues; ability to develop and maintain productive, collegial working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and alums
  • A sense of informed empathy and superb listening skills.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with thorough attention to detail; ability to set and attain goals while working both collaboratively and independently on various projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; and strong presentation skills; with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise independent judgement

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Public Administration, Organizational Leadership, Students Affairs, College Student Personnel Administration, or a related field
  • Experience with social Greek letter organizations in either an advisory or leadership capacity
  • Successful administrative experience in higher education, with experience in student activities, advising, Greek Life, leadership programs
  • Experience working effectively with students, staff, faculty, and senior administration within a higher education setting to advance institutional commitment to and inclusion and belonging related to, undergraduate retention, academic support services, faculty and staff diversity, and campus climate issues
