Primary Purpose of Department
The purpose of the Office of Student Development and Successes’ first-year advising team in the Lee College of Engineering is to help achieve the College of Engineering’s goals of advising, retaining, and graduating students. All advisors are responsible for assisting students in academic exploration, registration, and negotiating academic policies and resources.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Academic Advisor in the College of Engineering, Office of Student Development and Success, provides advising services for first-year College of Engineering majors and students in transition. The Assistant Director for First-Year Advising and Student Success will manage a caseload of students, providing academic support and success coaching to Lee College of Engineering first-year students. The Academic Advisor advises students concerning their academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and other academic activities to assist the student in making decisions concerning educational goals leading to graduation. This position will provide opportunities for professional development.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Academic Advisor in the Lee College of Engineering’s Office of Student Development and Success will assist first-year students in their educational goals. Advisors must have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented academic office with a significant advising caseload. The following list provides examples of the most typical duties for the advisor position.
  • Provide academic advising to first-year students majoring in the Lee College of Engineering
  • Help students define and develop realistic educational career plans through schedule planning for each semester
  • Promote academic success by continually monitoring student progress throughout the semester
  • Work with students and faculty to ensure that individual advisees are engaged with the College and are maintaining satisfactory academic progress
  • Assist with new student orientation
  • Utilizes group and/or individualized strategies to support and monitor the progress of students experiencing academic difficulty.
  • Monitors enrollment and retention data and includes outreach to unregistered and at-risk students
  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Freshman Advising to provide coordination and implementation of the Engineering Program for Academic Support and Success (EPASS) initiatives. This includes helping to develop a retention strategy to proactively target at-risk students.
  • Carefully monitor at-risk students and develop and oversee a Student Action Plan for students placed on Academic Probation
  • Collaborates with the Associate Director of Freshman Advising to develop and implement first-year specific data collection and tracking strategies to evaluate the effectiveness and quality of the success program and recommend changes with the goal of improving the first-year student experience
Minimum Education/Experience
Education: A master’s degree in academic advising, student services, higher education, engineering, or a related field is required.

Experience:
2+ years of experience involving student academic advising in a higher education setting, preferably involving extensive direct transfer student advising/counseling in a higher education setting.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • The candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills are a must.
  •  Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff, and faculty required. 
  • A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements.
  •  Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, Powerpoint) is necessary.
  • A working knowledge of BANNER, Starfish, and DegreeWorks is a plus.
