About the Department
 

The Corporate Engagement Office (CEO) is an integrative operating unit within the Office of Science, Innovation, National Laboratories, and Global Initiatives (SING). SING includes Science Strategy, CEO, the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship, and Innovation (Polsky Center), UChicago Global, and contract management and stewardship for Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) and Femi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). The CEO works with stakeholders at the University of Chicago and with companies to build partnerships to support and enhance the University’s missions in research and education, and to accelerate the translation of new discoveries. The unifying thread of programming focuses on enabling partnerships, collaboration, and working across divisions and institutions to translate scholarly pursuits, scientific discoveries, and technological developments into impact.


Job Summary
 

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Corporate Engagement, the Assistant Director for Business Intelligence will facilitate corporate strategy, partnership design and implementation to support the University’s strategic goals, particularly across science, technology, and innovation. This individual will work closely within the Corporate Engagement team to shape and execute strategic engagements which support the research and educational missions of the University, and to further the goals of its corporate partners. The candidate will play a key role in developing company engagement strategies through research and development of materials related to companies, strategic research opportunities, and funding opportunities. The Assistant Director for Business Intelligence will initiate a communications strategy by working with University senior leadership and faculty to position research strengths and capabilities for partnering, as well as designing, negotiating, and implementing partnerships utilizing University colleagues in Communications, URA, OLC, and the Polsky Center.
This position develops and implements the planning, development, and implementation of objectives, long-range and strategic plans, and identifies the strengths and weaknesses. Identifies new external partners to advance strategic priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs in-depth research and analysis, formulates preliminary strategic recommendations based on key findings, drafts detailed briefings outlining engagement opportunities to connect the University with industry partners.
  • Meets with University leadership and researchers to identify and shape collaboration opportunities with corporate partners.
  • Collaborates with University Research Administration, Office of Legal Counsel, and the Polsky Center to develop and maintain industry partner relationships to ensure compliance with University policy and procedures.  
  • Develops and maintains relations with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Assists with the execution of a range of projects related to corporate partnerships in research, innovation, career advancement, and civic engagement.
  • Acts as a researcher and planner for a wide array of efforts led by the department/division.
  • Develops, maintains, and analyzes catalogs and registries of information about student, staff, and faculty international travel.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Graduate degree in scientific, or another relevant field.

Experience:

  • At least three years work experience working in a relevant setting in a company, university, or relevant complex organization.

  • Strong analytical, communications, and project management skills, with the ability to guide the strategic implementation of projects in complex teams.  
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Examine data, to grasp complicated concepts, draw conclusions, and solve problems.

  • Capacity to build rapport and maintain relationships across the University.

  • Possess strong reading comprehension, analytical skills; detail oriented and organized.
  • Understand the necessity to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Capable of operating in a fast-paced environment and an ability to deal with ambiguity.
  • Knowledge or experience working in higher education especially with central administration in a complex research university environment.
  • Familiarity with research funding mechanisms as well as applied science and innovation.
