Job Overview

The Assistant Director, First Generation Student Initiatives is a three-year term position in support of the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) First Fellows Program which provides three years of holistic, comprehensive academic support and dedicated academic advising, beginning in students’ sophomore year and continuing through their senior year until graduation. They serve in advising, administrative, and communication capacities, functioning as the administrator for all management and operations of the Program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide one-on-one advising and comprehensive academic support to a cohort of first-generation students participating in the program
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for prospective and current students, staff, alumni, and faculty
  • Facilitate inter-program communication and collaboration
  • Maintain comprehensive programmatic records
  • Handle logistics for all programmatic events, including workshops, field trips, career events, and student-oriented social events
  • Teach a one-credit course every semester, and create and maintain content for the program including web-based promotional and informational emails
  • Collaborate with the Dean, an advisory board, a steering committee, and other student support services units on campus to coordinate program policies and activities

Work Interactions

Reporting to the College Dean’s Chief of Staff with a dotted reporting line to the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Education, the Assistant Director maintains consistent collaboration across the administration of the program.

Additionally, they interact with faculty and staff about a range of concerns related to operations including scheduling, payroll, and HR.

They also serve as the principal administrator and represent the program in interactions with Georgetown units such as CSP, GSP, CMEA, OSEI, the Red House, and the Cawley Career Center.

The Assistant Director plays a critical role in building and fostering a sense of belonging and an intellectual community among the entire cohort of approximately 100 students while ensuring that programmatic operations run smoothly; and functions as a holistic link between academic activities, programmatic processes, and first-generation students’ experience at Georgetown.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • An MA/MS in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field
  • At least 5 years of experience in academic administration in higher education and academic advising
  • Significant experience supporting first-generation College students and/or historically underserved students
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written
  • Experience partnering with student services units across a decentralized campus
  • A growth and collaborative mindset with an eye for process improvement
  • Ability to navigate and problem-solve within a complex organizational structure with tact and diplomacy
  • Comfort with technology and willingness to learn new technology and administrative tools
