Job Description

Under University College, the Experiential Learning Initiatives (ELI) unit pioneers programs and tools that allow students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real world industry projects and experiences beyond traditional learning spaces. Through the Experiential Learning Network and Work-integrated learning programs, ELI creates awareness and opens access to opportunities where learners can acquire skills and knowledge from diverse and unique firsthand experiences.  

Experiential Learning Initiatives is currently hiring an Assistant Director to provide leadership and support to the ELI program office. Under the direct supervision of the Program Director- Experiential Learning Initiatives, the Assistant Director will coordinate activities and functions to ensure that goals and objectives specified for the Experiential Learning Network and Work-integrated learning are being met including managing the day-to-day operations of the Work-integrated learning platform and tools. The ideal candidate has excellent communication skills, has the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, is prompt with their follow-through; appreciates and works well in innovative, diverse and highly-evolving environments, takes initiative; has high attention to detail; is proficient with university technology equipment and learns new technologies quickly and easily; has experience collaborating across various disciplines/departments; is passionate about working in an educational environment and contributing to efforts designed to increase student success; and is committed to fostering an inclusive environment.

The Assistant Director for ELI also plays a critical role in the Work+ Program, which is designed to prepare student-employees for their future professional careers. As a key participant in the Work+ Program, the Assistant Director for ELI will serve as a career guide and mentor to working learner(s) they have been assigned to supervise. Additionally, the Assistant Director will be involved in providing working learners opportunities to build valuable work skills as well as facilitating their professional development.

Essential Duties

  • Provide general support and work closely with the Program Director on the continued maintenance and growth of the Work-integrated learning program and launch of the Experiential Learning Network.
  • Serve as one of the key points of contact for faculty, staff, and students involved in and interested in Work-integrated learning.
  • Facilitate a Community of Practice at ASU centered around the sharing of research and best practices as it relates to experiential learning and work-integrated learning.
  • Lead digital content development to illustrate and highlight programs that exemplify experiential learning and work-integrated learning.
  • Research effective methodologies around both curricular and co/extra-curricular based experiential learning to inform programmatic decisions.
  • Coordinate and oversee administrative responsibilities, day to day maintenance, and relationship with the Work-integrated learning platform.
  • Create and evaluate outreach efforts to onboard additional faculty into Work-integrated learning.
  • Support faculty and staff from concept ideation through implementation and assessment.
  • Develop and facilitate design sessions with internal and external stakeholders; coordinate logistics, scheduling and participant communications focused on the development and assessment of programs that are part of Experiential Learning Initiatives.
  • Track and maintain participation and completion data for program participants, pilots, and design sessions.
  • Prepare regular reports, financial statements and records on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for leadership.
  • Contribute to preparation of proposals for funding and/or funding continuation from outside sponsors.
  • Support the development of new or revised program goals and objectives.
  • Assist in supervising and supporting working learners within the program and department as a whole.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a communications, student-facing program/service coordination or learning community management role in Higher Education or online service sectors. Past roles and experience in areas such as career services, internship management, student leadership development, etc. are ideal. (2 years)
  • Experience in demonstrating initiative and be a self-starter, while operating within broad guidance parameters
  • Experience managing multiple projects and prioritizing workload.
  • Experience in developing collaborative-working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience in developing creative, engaging and original digital content.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the current challenges, trends, and effective strategies to develop the employability of students in higher education.
  • Experience in organizing work of self and others.
  • Experience in the full suite of applications in Google Workspace, communication, and project management platforms (such as Slack and Monday.com).

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
