Assistant Director, Employment Reporting & Alumni Advising

Manage graduate and student data collection and reporting together with Assistant Dean. Advise J.D. and LL.M students and alumni on legal careers and law clerk and post-graduate job opportunities. Develop career-search resource and tools and programs. Design, create and present programs and projects in response to dynamic legal employment market. Manage relationships with student groups and outside constituents to design and initiate programs and projects.

Duties & Responsibilities:

STATISTICAL COLLECTION, RECORDKEEPING, REPORTING 

  • Manage, direct and coordinate data collection for graduates (ERSS, ABA, U.S. News). Report information under supervision of Assistant Dean.
  • Plan timing and content of student and graduate programs to maximize response rates and quality of reported data.
  • Coordinate with Communications, Admissions, Graduate Programs and other offices to suggest, publish, and promote relevant employment statistics and draft related materials for prospective and admitted students, accrediting bodies and media.
  • Monitor national developments in data reporting. Confer with and advise Assistant Dean on deadlines, trends and proposed changes.

CAREER ADVISING AND PROGRAMS

  • Provide extensive, comprehensive and continuing career counseling to law students, and periodically graduate law students and alumni of the school.
  • Familiarize students with resources and programs available in Career & Professional Development, including timing and scheduling of activities.
  • Develop and present workshops, conferences, programs and panels to assist students and alumni with career planning and job development skills. Work closely with other Career & Professional Development staff, student organizations, and local, state and national attorney groups to develop career related presentations.
  • Create, revise and update Career & Professional Development’s series of written guides on career development topics, responding to the particular needs and concerns of USD students and alumni.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive Career & Professional Development reference library that includes monographs on types of employment and areas of practice, relevant periodicals, journals, directories, employer materials, application forms and books.

EXTERNAL RELATIONS AND MANAGEMENT

  • Develop and maintain employer contact and relationships with law firms, corporations, government agencies, public interest agencies and other potential employers to cultivate expanded legal employment opportunities.
  • Assist Assistant Dean for Career & Professional Development with design of employer directed marketing materials and programs to promote school and students to outside world.
  • Periodically field and respond to recruiting calls from employers.
  • Periodically attend SDCBA, SDLRA, LAARLA, OCRLA, SDNCBA, Lawyers Club, IP and alumni receptions and other networking and market knowledge building events during and after regular business hours.
  • Attend local, regional and national events and job fairs that market the law school’s students and graduates to legal employers during and after regular business hours.
  • Maintain and create networks with local, national and international employers to create networks for job opportunities; visit alumni and potential employers to create additional opportunities for students and alumni. 

MANAGEMENT OF RECRUITING PROGRAMS

  • Assist in managing, implementing and developing of fall, spring, LA, Bay Area, and potentially additional recruiting programs, including coordination of on campus or off campus interviews, resume collections and direct application opportunities. Assist in recruiting new employers for these programs, working to increasing the number of employment opportunities for students and alumni.
  • Develop, monitor and promote job opportunities for students and alumni.
  • Develop and manage student materials regarding recruiting programs, including correspondence, guides and policies.
