ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, DEAF STUDIES CENTER, Wheelock College of Education & Human Development, Teaching and Learning (24500616960229)
The Deaf Center is a hub for Deaf and signing researchers, educators, creators, and technologists to promote sign languages and Deaf cultures, and to build a world in which the human right to accessible language is realized for all Deaf children. We conduct research on how sign languages are learned and used, design sign language-based creative works and technologies that foster learning and communication, and support a network of Deaf educators and leaders in multilingual multicultural education. The Assistant Director represents an outstanding career opportunity for an experienced leader who wants to drive growth for a strong mission-driven organization. The Assistant Director will manage the day-to-day operations of the center. The successful candidate will manage a range of center events and initiatives, and build public awareness of the work of the center. They will also oversee the centers operational budget and reporting.
Essential Functions:
- Program Management: Directs efforts to strategically plan, organize and manage- from planning and development to successful completion of programs key to the strategy of the Center: (e.g., overseeing the development of professional development materials and science communications, Graduate Student Fellowships). Collaborates with Center Directors to identify and develop program initiatives. 25%
- Event Management: Conceptualize, plan, and execute a range of in-person and virtual events. Provide event expertise, leadership and direction in initiating, planning and executing a wide variety of professional events that maximize Center visibility and build community. Leads execution by scoping event goals, mission, objectives and identifying targeted audiences, agenda planning, etc. 25%
- Operational Budget & Reporting: Maintain the center’s operational budget, make purchases, and prepare and maintain a variety of reports, including financial reports and presentations detailing achievements and impact. 10%
- Web Presence and Communications: Oversee strategic efforts to grow and enhance web presence (website, social media, branding, contact management), serving as a liaison to a team of web developers and marketing and communications staff 15%
- Hiring & Management: Hire, manage, and onboard consultants, student employees, and staff as needed to support program management, event management, and web presence and communications efforts. This would include, for example, identifying, hiring, and supervising content experts and videographers to create webinars or marketing and communications professionals to support public engagement efforts. 10%

- Bachelor's degree and 8+ years of relevant experience in project management and event planning
- Commitment to the cause and overall mission of the center
- Proficient in ASL
- Excellent organizational and written communication skills
- Experience fundraising and managing a budget
- Proven ability to plan and coordinate events both live and digitally
- Self-starter with problem solving skills and the ability to thrive in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment
- Excellent customer service skills
- Eager to both plan and work strategically and problem solve and troubleshoot when needed
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel as well as Google Docs
- Dependability and flexibility
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to create public-facing digital materials (e.g., with Canva or similar)
- Ability to understand research presentations and papers
- Knowledge of deaf education or sign language studies
