Job Description

The Assistant Director, Counseling Services , under direction of the Director, oversees assigned Student Counseling Services functional areas, supervises staff, provides crisis intervention, counseling services, outreach programs, and consultation. Assists Director with general administrative tasks as well as coordinates the internship program and the Women Center.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to students in crisis and provide short-term psychological counseling as needed. Execute campus outreach initiatives, trainings, and workshops for psycho-educational, social, and academic issues to increase the visibility, accessibility and utilization of Student Counseling Services within the campus community. Manage the daily operations of the center including creating policies and procedures for front desk operations and providing training for support staff and incoming staff. Provide clinical supervision to permanent counselors as well as coordinate the internship and Crisis Intervention programs.

  • Assist with organizing events and activities, and maintaining communications and marketing materials for SCS for the entire year. At the beginning of each semester, a recap of the coordination of activities and events will be reviewed.  Assist with evaluating and assessing Student Counseling Services in order to improve services. Evaluation conducted by reviewing how the staff implement their workload and use assessment instruments to determine the types of students that seek counseling services.

  • Participate in campus-wide retention and persistence activities by sitting in committees and giving presentations to the campus community on how to identify mental health problems and referring them to SCS. Serve as the liaison to the college community and provide the administrative and clinical supervision to manage crises in the absence of the Director of Counseling.

  • Manage the daily operations of the center including creating policies and procedures for front desk operations and providing training for support staff and incoming staff.

  • Participate in campus-wide retention and persistence activities by sitting in committees and giving presentations to the campus community on how to identify mental health problems and referring them to SCS.

  • Assist the Director in completing Annual Reports and Assessments by gathering the data and extrapolating the necessary specifics from folders and writing the staff accomplishments.

  • Assist the Director in managing the grants awarded to SCS and the Women’s Center by implementing the requirements of the grants. Assist in writing grants as needed.


Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Educational or Clinical Psychology or related field.

  • Five years full-time post-licensing experience in a college counseling center.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of career counseling theory, learning theory, and vocational assessment. Crisis intervention skills. Consultation skills. Presentation skills. General counseling skills.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Additional Requirements:

  •  Some evening/weekend hours are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A current, valid Texas license as a mental health professional (LPC or PSY).
