The Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning (CCTL) advances teaching and learning at the University of Chicago by fostering a vibrant community of pedagogical reflection and innovation. The Center provides support for faculty, instructors, and graduate students across all disciplines through workshops, conferences, courses, learning communities, and consultation on higher education pedagogy. The CCTL also works with schools, divisions, and departments to advise on teaching development initiatives and collaborates with campus partners on developing and enhancing pedagogical programs. Central to the mission of the CCTL is the College Pedagogical Development Initiative (CPDI), a new suite of programs to provide robust teaching development support for faculty and instructors who teach UChicago undergraduates.


Job Summary
 

Reporting to and collaborating with the Director of the CCTL, the Assistant Director (AD) will manage the development and implementation of pedagogical programming in support of faculty and instructors, in particular the programs associated with the pilot College Pedagogical Development Initiative (CPDI). The CPDI aims to provide a structured program of pedagogical development for instructors through workshops, classroom observation and feedback, and one-on-one consultation, along with a faculty learning community program and annual colloquium on teaching and learning. The AD will lead program logistics, create resources, develop and lead workshops, implement a classroom observation and feedback process, and lead assessment of the programs, among other duties. They will also teach one section a year of Course Design and College Teaching, the CCTL’s flagship pedagogy course, and contribute to other aspects of Center operations as needed.
This is an excellent opportunity for a recent PhD who is interested in exploring a career in educational development and gaining experience in a center for teaching and learning. The individual in this role will be in a position to make a significant impact on pedagogical programs at the University while developing skills relevant to the field. A successful candidate will have a PhD in a discipline represented at the University of Chicago, a track record of engagement with pedagogy initiatives, experience in college teaching, and knowledge of the literature on teaching and learning. This position is for a limited, two-year term.

Responsibilities

  • Leads logistics for the CPDI, including announcements, application and review processes, scheduling of workshops, developing Canvas sites, website updates, and other communications efforts relevant to the program.
  • Manages the budget for CPDI programming, including the financial support disbursed to program participants in support of their proposed teaching projects.
  • Develops and manages pedagogical resources (guides, literature reviews, etc.) for all programs and events related to the CPDI.
  • Develops and implements an assessment plan for CPDI programs to evaluate effectiveness of reaching program goals, including surveys and interviews of participants, review of materials produced by participants, analysis of teaching observation results, etc. Revise strategic priorities and make programmatic changes in light of the assessment, in consultation with Director of the CCTL.
  • Designs and leads a number of pedagogical workshops for faculty and instructors on topics including learning and course redesign, assessment and grading, active and inclusive student engagement, and gathering feedback on teaching, among others.
  • Leads the planning of an annual colloquium on teaching and learning, including directing logistics and communications relevant to the event, collaborating with other CCTL staff and campus partners as needed.
  • Manages and performs classroom observations and individual teaching consultations for faculty and instructors.
  • Develops and implements a classroom observation protocol suitable to the teaching and learning environment of the College and appropriate for supporting peer-to-peer classroom observation and feedback among faculty and instructors.
  • Revises the CCTL’s midcourse review protocol (a mid-quarter student focus group assessment) and develops a process to implement at scale, including recruiting and supervising part-time graduate staff.
  • Provides guidance and input to several faculty learning communities (groups of instructors engaged in various pedagogical and teaching development projects).
  • Collects and analyzes learning community reports to support assessment efforts.
  • Teaches one section of Course Design and College Teaching, a pedagogy course for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
  • Advises constituents, inclusive of faculty, lecturers, graduate students, or postdocs on various aspects of scholarly development.
  • Responsible for scholarly development programs/services offered by office, including content development and administration.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
