Description of Work Unit
The Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources is an academic unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources with undergraduate majors in Natural Resources Tourism and Human Dimensions in Natural Resources. In addition, the Department of HDNR houses Master’s of Science degrees in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources and Conservation Leadership, a Master’s of Tourism Management, and a PhD in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources. The faculty is also active in human dimensions of natural resources research as well as outreach.
Position Summary
The Center for Protected Area Management (CPAM) is seeking an assistant director to help develop and lead key programmatic areas and specific projects that support the capacity development of people working in protected areas and conservation around the globe. The assistant director reports to the Director and serves as the implementation lead for our Spanish Protected Area Management Community of Practice and for our Ranger Support Program. They will also provide support to programs focused on gender equity and sustainable tourism in protected areas. The primary duty of this position is to oversee program development from the initial idea to implementation and through to monitoring/evaluation. This includes building alliances with partners and fundraising to expand program support. The person filling this position will be a life-long learner and collaborator that is dedicated to capacity building, program/project management, relationship building, and be able to work creatively to connect CPAM activities with the reality on-the-ground in the geographies where we work. They will be able to bring science, traditional knowledge, or other forms of learning to our program development and implementation and to our center’s strategic vision. In addition, the Assistant Director will provide strategic support to the Director across all program areas and provide technical guidance and support in developing CPAM’s long-term vision and approaches.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Conservation or Protected Areas.
  • 2 years of experience working with project/program design in conservation.
  • Experience living and traveling in Latin America.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues related to international conservation and protected area management.
  • Experience with Salesforce.
  • Experience with research and overall project management.
  • Strong ability to work independently and/or remotely, while maintaining productivity.
  • Experience in cross-cultural communication, training, and capacity building.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in team environments and cultivate team success.
  • Fluency (oral and written) in English and Spanish, including experience with technical writing and public speaking in both languages.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Portuguese language abilities
  • Proven ability to raise funds from varying types of donors.
  • Proven skills in conflict management, problem-solving and change management.
  • Proven success in developing strategic partnerships and managing relationships with governments, NGOs and other partners.

  • Responsible for proposal writing for research grants, including submission of those grants and serving as PI for those grants within the CSU system
