ABOUT UC SANTA CRUZ UC Santa Cruz is a public university like no other in California, combining the experience of a small, liberal arts college with the depth and rigor of a major research university. It's known as an unconventional place where innovation and experimentation is part of the campus's DNA. That playful, bold spirit still thrives today, all on a campus renowned as among the most beautiful in the world.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The Center for Economic Justice and Action (CEJA), formerly the Blum Center on Poverty, Social Enterprise, and Participatory Governance, is part of the Division of Social Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. CEJA works to alleviate poverty, reduce food and housing insecurity, promote fiscal equity, and advance economic justice. Bringing together community partners and stakeholders, students, and faculty, we design, develop, and research concrete, scalable strategies for improving the well-being of low-income individuals and families, including women and mothers, communities of color, people experiencing homelessness, and minoritized students. Our analyses illuminate community needs and strengths, offer insight into program effectiveness, and provide tools and resources that can be used to challenge inequities and change systems. CEJA is the home to the UC Essential Needs Research, Training, and Promising Practices Consortium. Through this new initiative, CEJA funds cutting-edge research across the UC system related to students’ essential needs, offers workshops and training to campus essential needs practitioners, and serves as a hub for learning about best practices for reducing student food and housing insecurity.
JOB SUMMARY Working with the Center for Economic Justice and Action's Director, the Center's Associate Director, and the Principal Investigator of the UC Basic Needs Research, Training, and Promising Practices Consortium, the Assistant Director actively seeks out and supports new funding opportunities and collaborative partners on- and off-campus. The Assistant Director facilitates engagement in collaborative and interdisciplinary contracts, grants, and fundraising in support of the Center, partners and projects, and serves as a divisional liaison to the UCSC Office of Research. The Assistant Director interacts regularly with administrative and academic units across campus, the UC system, and other external entities, representing the Center for Economic Justice and Action, the Social Sciences Division, and UC Santa Cruz; manages ongoing relationships with partners, affiliates, and collaborators; and fosters new relationships between UC Santa Cruz and prospective affiliates and collaborators. The Assistant Director participates in fundraising for the Center for Economic Justice and Action all of its affiliate programs, working with the Division's Development staff on donor and alumni cultivation, engagement, and stewardship. The Assistant Director is also responsible for external communications of UCSC's research accomplishments in the social sciences to the public, press, foundations, government and the UCSC community, promoting the Center for Economic Justice and Action through marketing, communication, and strategic outreach.
