Department Summary

Campus Planning and Facilities Management (CPFM) is a vibrant department, which comprises five units, and approximately 270 employees: Facilities Services, Utilities & Energy, Campus Planning, Office of Sustainability, and Design & Construction. CPFM plans, builds, maintains, and operates the infrastructure that supports the University of Oregon's mission of exceptional teaching, discovery, and public service. As stewards of a physical legacy, CPFM enables the university community to achieve its potential by providing a campus that is safe, clean, beautiful, inspiring, and environmentally responsible.

Campus Planning guides the planning and design of campus to accommodate growth and change while preserving its heritage and enriching environments that support the university's mission. We work collaboratively to create an exceptional and special campus experience through the physical campus environment. Campus Planning offers services in campus planning, community and transportation planning, historic preservation, real estate management, and space planning.


Position Summary

The Assistant Director - Campus Planning manages Campus Planning unit activities and staff. This position manages planning projects, develops and implements long-range planning policies, and provides supervision, staff support and professional advice for planning activities at the university. In addition, this position is responsible for at least one area of expertise (e.g., open space planning, transportation planning, or land use planning).

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Campus Planning. This position works with the Director of Campus Planning to set priorities and performs tasks independently while also working as a member of a team. This position interacts regularly with other CPFM staff and leadership, on-campus departments, and external parties (in particular, City staff and other community partners).

This position supervises two Planning Associate positions.


Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Planning, Public Administration, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field
• 5-year history of professional experience in architectural or landscape design, planning, and design issues which involve public processes
• Lead work or supervisory experience

• Demonstrates a high level of competence in design, planning, and the creation of planning documents
• Possesses the ability to assemble, organize, and present information, both in written and graphic forms, derived from a variety of original and secondary sources
• Demonstrates an ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing, with varied groups and to work effectively with university administrators, faculty, staff, and students, as well as with governmental entities, community groups, and the general public
• Possesses strong organizational, time allocation, and project management skills, and takes initiative
• Demonstrates an understanding of the objectives, components, and structure of a research university
• Manages people in a way that advances and supports the missions of the office and the university and promotes employee morale
• Leads by example and maintains the highest ethical standards within the department and within the university
• Demonstrates an ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience and/or education that provides an understanding of university planning policy issues and processes
• Experience and/or education in planning policy issues and processes related to the University of Oregon
