Campus as Lab (CAL) is a Sustainable Duke program that seeks to enhance the relationship among Duke University faculty and student research, Duke’s own campus, and the community. The Campus as Lab (CAL) manager will work with faculty, students, and Duke’s operational staff (including Facilities Management, Dining, Parking and Transportation, etc.) to cultivate and support a CAL program at Duke University.

The program functions at the nexus of operational, educational and research activities that result in the advancement of hands-on learning and applied sustainability. The CAL manager will additionally work to help Duke University achieve its climate and sustainability goals including its carbon neutrality goal and goals outlined in its Sustainability Strategic Plan .

Current examples of CAL projects include wetland restoration, stormwater management, carbon offsetting, forest management, and farming and food systems. Such partnerships use the campus as a living laboratory to study and solve on-campus manifestations of global climate and sustainability issues. Through scientific research, academic learning, and existing campus experience, students are better able to understand complex, global issues and their direct effects. An expanded program will engage additional faculty and students, potentially targeting the largest majors or large gateway classes at Duke to enhance climate and sustainability integration across campus. The CAL program encourages students to develop and implement new ideas with the possibility not only to transform the Duke campus, but also the world.


Strategic Planning - 25%
  • Co-develop and formalize Duke’s Campus-As-Lab program that aligns with the priorities of Duke University’s Climate Commitment and Sustainable Duke.
  • In alignment with broader climate and sustainability goals, this staff member will collaborate with other academic stakeholders on climate fluency, infusion of C&S materials in classes, and other topics related to the Climate Commitment
  • Participate in university-level strategic planning as it relates to academics and using the campus as a living laboratory (ex. the Campus Sustainability Committee)


Program Management - 25%
  • Plan, coordinate, and administer assigned CAL projects to include developing and implementing procedures and processes to ensure all projects are meeting objectives and timelines.
  • Contribute to the management of CAL projects by monitoring project progress and timelines, participating in meetings with project partners as needed.
  • Develop the framework to evaluate the CAL program and make recommendations to director of Sustainable Duke for improving the program
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of all programs and initiatives for unified communications through channels including twice monthly sustainability newsletter, articles on Duke Today, daily posts on social media and announcements to Sustainable Duke's listservs

Internal and External Engagement - 25%
  • Maintain relationships with campus departments, programs, organizations groups as well as professional associations and colleagues at other institutions to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Develop and identify student research opportunities by reaching out to faculty and operations-focused staff at Duke and local communities.
  • Develop and lead training and informational workshops for interested faculty, students, staff, and community partners.
  • Provide outreach to student sustainability organizations about opportunities for CAL research topics.
  • Expand current outreach and engagement beyond environmental- and sustainability-oriented organizations to include campus diversity and academic groups
  • Present on Campus As Lab efforts internally and externally (e.g. at conferences)

Data and Reporting - 15%
  • Develop opportunities and strategies to ensure campus-related data is accessible and transparent for use in CAL projects
  • Strategize and execute a plan to report on the impact of the Campus as Lab program annually including identifying and tracking key performance indicators.

Finance and Administration - 10%
  • Manage and track the Campus-As-Lab grant to ensure that the funds are being stewarded in alignment with project objectives.
  • Complete administrative tasks related to Sustainable Duke and the CAL program including event planning, scheduling, purchasing, data entry, and student hiring.
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s or higher degree preferred) and 5-6 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills, with the ability to manage and support multiple projects at different stages with an emphasis on accuracy and meeting milestones and deadlines
  • Demonstrate ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment
  • Inquisitive attitude, self-motivated, and self-driven approach with ability to work in a high-pace, collaborative environment
  • Professional writing experience and ability and comfort with public speaking and presentations
  • Proficiency in various software to collect and manage data, create reports that outline progress and impact, and maintain a database of past and current projects.
  • Professional experience working in higher education is preferred
  • Hybrid or fully in-person arrangement required (at least 2 days per week in office)
  • Ability to travel to other buildings around campus for meetings and presentations
  • Occasional work outside of normal business hours (9-5), e.g. nights and weekends for events and programming.
  • Ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects, up to 25 pounds. safely

  • Reporting Department: Sustainable Duke, reports to Director of Sustainable Duke
  • Supervisory Capacity: No current, direct staff supervision but this is subject to future funding opportunities, supervision of student interns
  • Pay Range: $60,000-68,000 annually (full-time basis, 40 hours/week)

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s or higher degree preferred).


Experience

Requires five years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
