What we want
The Assistant Director, Budget works under general direction, performs complex and highly responsible job duties in the preparation, maintenance, and control of the day-to-day operating budget. This position will assist the director in effective and efficient coordination of the budget process.

What you need to know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or the equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Seven years of experience in accounting, finance or related areas

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications

  • Knowledge of budgeting processes

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in accounting or finance

  • Experience in higher education

  • Working knowledge of FAMIS and Workday

Responsibilities:

Supervision and Leadership

  • Performs complex and highly responsible job duties in the preparation and maintenance of the day-to-day operating budget.

  • Provides leadership and guidance to the Health Science Center in planning and implementing budget strategies, provides oversight of the allocation of funds.

  • Supervises staff.

  • Provides supervision and direction to financial accountant and financial analyst supporting the budget office.

  • Directly works with the agency CFO along with Budget and Reporting staff to coordinate the budget process effectively and efficiently.

  • Leads and supervises the budget process, including analysis of internal and external financial data to assist in developing short and long-range budget strategies for the Health Science Center.

  • Develops and implements process to track changes to operating budgets during annual budget development.

Budget Reporting and Coordination

  • Monitors federal and state budgets, reconciles unit budget allocations, and transfers. 

  • Responds to budget inquiries.

  • Serves as a fiscal liaison with units and administrative services, as well as the Texas A&M University System.

  • Coordinates training efforts for units and budget coordinators.

  • Assists in gathering and analyzing financial and statistical information and evaluates and monitors administrative functions.

  • Provides financial information, records, and support to auditors, both internally and externally.

  • Implements written communications and other methods to effectively disseminate budget-related information and processes.

  • Coordinates with CFO to provide review and oversight for HSC administrative accounts.

  • Assists in developing and implementing budget guidelines and financial policies and procedures and webpage resources coordinated within Budgets and Reporting Office.

  • Coordinates legislative analysis, budget preparation, and the forecast of capital assets and operating costs.

  • Participates in the bi-annual development of the legislative appropriations request.
