The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is the home for the Center for Access, Persistence and Achievement (CAPA), Social Justice, Inclusion and Conflict Resolution (SJICR), the Center for Neurodiversity, and DEI at the Virtua Health, College of Medicine and Life Sciences of Rowan University. The Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is shared with the Division of Academic Affairs.

The Division of DEI will facilitate Rowan’s efforts to be the leading university committed to addressing persistent issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion that result in positive outcomes for students, faculty, and staff.

Mission of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
The Division of DEI at Rowan University leads and supports initiatives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion by:

  • Developing and sustaining meaningful partnerships with internal and external constituents that result in a more diverse and inclusive community;

  • Utilizing data to inform continuous improvement efforts and innovation; and

  • Implementing university-wide culturally responsive and relevant programming that result in equitable educational opportunities for students and an affirming culture and climate

Mission of the Office of Social Justice, Inclusion & Conflict Resolution (SJICR)
The Office of Social Justice, Inclusion, and Conflict Resolution is committed to establishing transformative educational experiences. Through culturally sustaining practices, we aim to cultivate leadership, identity development, and global citizenship by empowering our community at Rowan and beyond. 

The Assistant Director of BiPoc and  Intercultural Engagement is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and oversight of the BIPoC and Intercultural Center, which provides opportunities for all members of the Rowan University community to explore, organize, and promote learning around issues and experiences of marginalized and underrepresented students on campus.  This person will provide leadership and monitoring of support resources, community-building activities, designated space, and social, personal, academic, and leadership support for underrepresented and marginalized students on campus. The Assistant Director ensures the BIPoC and Intercultural Center facilitates a greater responsiveness to the needs of underrepresented and marginalized students on campus through, programming, education, outreach, and advocacy. The Assistant Director engages with partners within and external to Rowan University and cultivates a co-curricular experiential learning environment to elevate the voices of students from underrepresented and marginalized communities to promote equity, inclusion, and belonging.  

The Assistant Director will serve on the leadership team with the Director and Assistant Directors of SJICR, and assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to promote a campus climate that is inclusive and supportive of a diverse student population. The Assistant Director will administer assigned budgets and oversee expenditures for programs and operations as determined by the Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

BIPoC & Intercultural Engagement 

  • Lead and manage the operations of the BiPoc and  Intercultural Center.

  • Serve on and provide reports to the SJICR Advisory Council.

  • Guide long-term development and programming of the BiPoC and  Intercultural  Center and ensure its operations are in line with SJICR and Rowan University’s commitment to provide educational resources for and about underrepresented and marginalized communities, to increase awareness, identify issues and assets, and strengthen the culturally diverse campus community.

  • Develop and deliver educational workshops regarding intercultural awareness, cultural humility, identity development, etc. 

  • Work collaboratively to plan and execute signature programs and Heritage Month celebrations (i.e. SJICR Kickoff & Cultural Org. Fair, Politics of Black and Brown Hair Symposium, Black History Month, APIDA Heritage Month, Latinx Heritage Month, SJICR Speaker Series, Cultural Graduation ceremonies, etc.).

  • Co-create, co-facilitate, and evaluate programming efforts grounded in Identity Development, Critical Race Theory, or other culturally relevant and culturally sustainable pedagogy or frameworks.

  • Serve as an advocate and resource on issues facing marginalized and underrepresented students on campus, cultural pluralism, and diversity.

  • Engage students, staff, faculty, and off-campus community partners through networking and collaboration on programs and participation in events.

  • Advocate for, provide support, and advise cultural and identity-based affiliated organizations of their rights and privacy.

  • Collaborate with affiliated student organizations in designing and implementing campus-wide programs and initiatives.

  • Provide direct supervision to and work closely with the graduate coordinator for BiPoc and Intercultural Engagement. 

  • Participate in the training, supervision, and performance evaluations of graduate coordinator staff.

  • Develop and implement educational opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to educate and raise awareness of issues and assets relevant to minoritized and underrepresented communities.

  • Exhibit an understanding of the current best practices in the field of student development and an awareness of emerging issues in higher education including social justice, cultural competency, retention and persistence, at-risk student factors, community building, and student learning.

  • Engage students, staff, faculty, and off-campus community partners through networking and collaboration on programs and participation in events.

  • Collaborate and provide guidance on university policies, practices and appropriate educational opportunities to ensure the campus effectively serves the needs of underrepresented and marginalized students, staff and faculty.

General/Overarching Responsibilities:

  • Provide anti-racist, equity-minded leadership in the Office of Social Justice, Inclusion & Conflict Resolution to develop and assess programs that will assist students with identity development, leadership

  • In collaboration with the leadership team, develop and implement an office strategic plan.

  • Develop, demonstrate, and promote awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful campus community. 

  • Assist with cultivating and providing cultural representation throughout SJICR, ensuring robust programming, diverse curriculum, and inclusive spaces for students served.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of marketing and communication strategies, social media and printed materials to ensure visibility of programs, resources and services to expand engagement with students, staff, and faculty.

  • Create and present educational programs and educational workshops that promote an understanding of and appreciation for the principles of equity and inclusion among Rowan’s students, staff, and faculty.

  • Monitor budget allocations and annual expenditures as directed by the SJICR Director.

  • Collaborate with academic units to develop curricular and co-curricular opportunities that align with the missions of SJICR and the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. 

  • Assess and analyze the effectiveness and impact of programs and services to determine necessary program modifications. 

  • Develop partnerships with campus, community, and affiliate organizations that support students and the mission of the programs, departments, and divisions.

  • Identify and assist in raising external resources to support SJICR initiatives (e.g. grants, gifts).

  • Plan, assign, and review work to staff to ensure that group objectives are met.

  • Serve on a variety of campus committees as assigned.

  • Work evenings, weekends, and other times as required.

  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Inclusive Campus Culture Initiatives

  • Build campus-wide partnerships that support student engagement in experiential education initiatives which promote identity development, leadership, and global citizenship through the lens of social justice.

  • Support strategies to promote recruitment, retention, and graduation of underrepresented and underserved students.

  • Promote an understanding of the supports and systems that are most effective in helping students that are underrepresented, underserved, or who experience systemic and culturally based forms of bias and prejudice to succeed in higher education.

Required Education:
Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education Administration/Student Affairs, Public Administration, or a related discipline.

Required Experience:

  • (2) Two years of related and progressively responsible experience in work related to diversity, social justice and inclusion in the college/university environment

  • Direct experience planning and coordinating programs serving populations of students that are underrepresented, underserved, or who experience systemic and culturally based forms of bias and prejudice

Qualifications:
A clear record of accomplished collaborative involvement with the campus, the community, office staff and management is desired. Ability to maintain appropriate professional confidentiality. Ability to work in a stressful environment and with great attention to detail.

Ability to communicate effectively and interact tactfully with all levels of university students, staff, faculty, and trustees; read, analyze, and interpret documents, budgets and contracts; and respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Reasoning Skills
Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, conduct assessment of needs and program effectiveness, and apply data and analysis skills to the formulation of proposals and solutions.

Technology
Proficient in use of technology to carry out electronic communication and develop both printed and electronic documents using computers and the Internet. Experience with Windows or Macintosh system software, Microsoft Office (Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Access), Outlook and other email software, Canva, and Banner (preferred) as well as fluency in social media (Instagram & Facebook). Understanding of relational database systems and ability to oversee maintenance of technology assets.
