About the Department

The Bearcat Bands, a unit of the Division of Student Affairs, is a comprehensive campus band program providing educational opportunities, artistic expression, and leadership development programs to students through music.
 

Ensembles of the Bearcat Bands include the spirit band program (Marching Band and multiple Basketball Bands), multiple Concert Bands, Jazz Ensembles, various Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion Ensembles, beginning instrumental lessons, and various educational clinics. Bearcat Bands membership is open to every enrolled student at the University of Cincinnati, including all satellite campuses, as well as students attending Greater Cincinnati Collegiate connection schools. Participation in the program is by placement audition. The Bearcat Bands provides opportunities for everyone: those with considerable experience, those with none, and those in between.

Job Overview

Under general supervision from the Associate Director of Bearcat Bands, the Assistant Director will guide and oversee the operational and instructional activities of the Bearcat Bands visual ensembles (Color Guard and Feature Twirlers) and contribute to the overall activities of the unit.


Essential Functions
  • Serve as the primary instructor, administrator, and advisor for the Bearcat Bands Color Guard and Feature Twirlers. Rehearse the Color Guard and Feature Twirlers and create choreography as assigned.
  • Supervise the Bearcat Bands Program Manager and student managers as assigned.
  • Provide direct supervision to Color Guard and Feature Twirlers contracted staff (i.e. hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.). Collaborate with those contracted creative and instructional staff and oversee the preparation and distribution of related materials.
  • Recruit and retain Bearcat Bands Color Guard and Feature Twirler students utilizing indoor/outdoor competitive pageantry networks and off campus school visitation.
  • Attend and monitor full band and other band sub-group rehearsals and performances.
  • Act as the Band Director in their absence.
  • Perform research and other creative activity pertaining to band, music education, pageantry, and/or related aspects.
  • Complete administrative tasks related, but not limited, to the Color Guard and Feature Twirlers budgeting; equipment procurement, distribution, collection, storage, and maintenance; uniforms and other apparel; prospective and returning member communications and documentation; marketing and advertising; collaborative projects with other campus and community members.
  • Recommend and develop procedures.

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree must be in music, education or related field.
  • Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

Experience must include musical directing.


Additional Qualifications Considered

Performing experience in outdoor and/or indoor competitive pageantry ensembles with emphasis in Color Guard.
