The College of Agriculture is seeking an Assistant Dean of Research and Graduate Education. This is a part-time (0.50 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Assistant Dean of Research and Graduate Education plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of agriculture and natural resources through key efforts to support the formation and success of research teams, providing leadership for successful graduate education, and driving collaboration for the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) at Oregon State University. Working closely with the Associate Dean for Research (ADR), CAS administrative team members, and other university stakeholders, this role drives the nucleation of interdisciplinary research teams, fosters the advancement of research initiatives, supports success in attracting research funding, advances graduate and postdoctoral education for CAS, works on recruitment and retention of graduate students, and nurtures collaboration both within and beyond the university community. We seek an accomplished candidate with a strong agricultural and life sciences background, adept research management skills, and an unwavering commitment to propelling innovation and growth within the agricultural and natural resources sector. This part-time, 0.5 FTE, 12-month administrative position is intended for a current Full Professor in CAS. As part of your role in the college, there is an expectation that you embody and advance the principles and practices conveyed in the CAS CARE Commitment document.

Key Responsibilities
This position brings leadership to 1) College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) research programs through supporting the formation, advancement, and success of multidisciplinary research teams in securing and expanding research funding, 2) CAS Graduate Programs and Postdoctoral Training through a focused effort to enhance experiences and opportunities for trainees, diversify support for trainee positions, and develop new paradigms for graduate and postdoctoral experiences for CAS, and 3) stronger relationships with research partners, allied industry, government agencies, and academic institutions that foster collaboration and support for research and graduate education. Tasks described below will be overseen and developed in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Research and/or appropriate college committees.
45% Research Team Development, Research Administration, and Leadership
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for college-wide research team building.
  • Create and engage processes for forming research teams, bringing together faculty members with complementary skills and research interests.
  • Empower research teams by developing skills to identify research funding, develop competitive proposals, and secure external funding.
  • Develop strategies to encourage collaboration among research teams and foster interdisciplinary research initiatives.
  • Support faculty in the aggressive pursuit of extramural funds.
  • Support for the professional development of research teams. This could involve organizing workshops, seminars, or training sessions held on and off campus requiring driving to branch experiment stations and or other stakeholder locations.
  • Assess the performance and impact of research teams. This may involve setting metrics, conducting evaluations, and providing feedback to help teams improve and excel in their interactions and in their research.
  • Provide dynamic leadership and guidance to research teams while fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Liaison between research teams and higher administration. Advocate for research teams’ needs and accomplishments and communicate achievements to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Facilitate seamless communication and collaboration across diverse university units, both administrative and discipline-specific.
  • Partner with the CAS Director of Sponsored Programs Services and OSU Research Office on activities related to team formation, planning, and training and to identify funding opportunities in the development of competitive grant proposals.
  • Adhere to rigorous compliance with federal regulations, university policies, and funding agency guidelines.

35% Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Studies
  • Serve as the central source of information within CAS for developing policies and procedures relative to graduate education, student research, graduate student employment, and student professional development.
  • Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, and the OSU Graduate School to ensure robust delivery of graduate programs.
  • Develop and maintain activities targeted at recruiting, admitting, and retaining exceptionally high-quality graduate students. Proactively enhance the diversity of CAS graduate programs.
  • Coordinate programs for graduate students’ professional development, such as fellowships, training, awards, and other recognitions.
  • Work to enhance the postdoctoral experience for trainees.
  • Develop, manage, and allocate resources to support graduate education.
  • Lead reporting efforts on graduate programs and outcomes to support agencies and partners.

15% Partnerships, Collaboration, and Networking
  • Cultivate and maintain robust relationships with industry partners, government agencies, and academic institutions, fostering collaborative research efforts and securing external support for research initiatives. Requires driving to many locations across Oregon for various in person meetings.
  • Represent, as needed, the interests of the CAS Office of Research on committees and work groups across the university and with stakeholder groups.
  • May lead and direct the work of others.
  • Develop relationships with external partners to support graduate programs and postdoctoral trainees.

5% Service
  • Provide service to the College and University through committee service and leadership as appropriate and requested by CAS and university administration. Serve on state, regional, and national advisory committees appropriate to position responsibilities and participate in professional organization activities.
What You Will Need
Tenured faculty member at the rank of full professor in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University.
Ph.D. in agricultural science, natural resources, or related field.
Demonstrated experience in agricultural and/or natural resources research, grant writing, and research program management.
Demonstrated support of graduate education and professional development.
Demonstrated ability to communicate and engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in research and education.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

This position is a combination of Corvallis campus-based and off-campus activities. This position requires travel by car across the State of Oregon to visit College faculty, research facilities, attendance at Field Days, and meetings with stakeholders. Other official business travel as appropriate.
