Position Summary

 

The Assistant Dean of Graduate Education, working under the direction of the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, will provide programming and services to support and enhance the graduate student learning experience and graduate student success. The Assistant Dean will be responsible for direct graduate student advising, educational support, and program development in graduate student affairs and graduate education and assessment.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the Faculty Advisor for 1st year graduate students to implement and develop process for course advising for graduate students
  • Develop advisory program to assist students with all aspects of course planning, rotation integration, and laboratory progress to the thesis
  • Develop and maintain regular communication with incoming and current graduate students
  • Work with faculty and students on academic policies and programs, academic integrity and misconduct, and responsible conduct of research
  • Work with faculty and students on mentoring and communication concerns
  • Develop and implement the graduate student ombudsman program; measures of graduate student satisfaction; and mentor training program
  • Develop programs and advising to enhance the student learning environment
  • Work with Academic Affairs Committee
  • Review Student Advisory Committee reports and follow up on recommendations
  • Review thesis research reports and follow up with graduate student and mentor as necessary
  • Review grade reports and work with Office of Academic Support as necessary
  • Develop and monitor graduate student milestone measures and time-line to degree
  • Meet with students and Office of Academic Support as needed to develop course plan and/or laboratory research plan
  • Work with the Graduate Curriculum Committee
  • Assessment – work with the Office of Institutional Assessment on evaluation plans and instruments to assess learning outcomes
  • Work with course leaders on metrics for student success
  • Work with the Office of Institutional Assessment on ongoing accreditation bench marks, program metrics and required reporting
  • Participate in new course development and graduate student enrichment activities
  • Develop new educational services and offerings
  • Work with Graduate Finance Director to review and update budget for graduate training
  • Work with Director of Graduate Admissions and the Graduate Admissions Committee on various aspects of recruitment and admissions
  • Participate in various recruitment and current student events
  • Provide periodic reports of progress in all areas and summary reports as requested
  • Work with the Associate Dean, the Training Grant Directors, and Graduate Office Training Grant Team on current and future training grants.  
  • Work with the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs on various special and ongoing projects and new initiatives
  • Work with the Associate Dean, the Director of Career and Professional Development, and the Office of Grant Support on fellowship initiatives and fellowship preparation. 
  • Work with the Associate Dean, the Senior Faculty Advisor, and the Chair of the Qual Exam Steering Committee on Qual Exam preparation and initiatives.
  • Work with the Associate Dean, the Director of Graduate Diversity, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion on various diversity training initiatives.
  • Participate in various institutional committees and task forces as required
  • Act as representative of the graduate program and liason to various institutional units
  • Participate in regional and national biomedical graduate program meetings


  • PhD Degree; 4 or more years experience in Higher Education (Preferably Graduate Education)
  • Student advising experience
  • Experience with assessment tools and evaluation resources
  • Supervisory/Management experience

  • High level communication and interpersonal skills
