Summary

Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) School of Medicine (SOM) develops diverse, compassionate physician leaders and educators who provide expert patient-centered care to diverse populations, supported by evidence-based practice and scientific innovation. The SOM offers programs that cover the learning continuum from Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), Graduate Medical Education (GME) to Continuing Professional Development (CPD). In addition, SOM also offers MD/PhD and Baccalaureate/MD programs.

 

Baylor's UME program has an accelerated, integrated approach to teaching the core scientific concepts that underlie medicine and our exceptionally diverse clinical training opportunities combine to create a curriculum that prepares our students for success. Commencing with AY2023-2024, the UME program will expand to Temple, Texas (BCM Temple), in partnership with Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH). Baylor Scott & White Health is prepared to support the program with its expansive clinical enterprise with a focus on value-based care that features a 640-bed teaching and research hospital with a Level I trauma center. As a part of a large multi-specialty integrated physician group located in central Texas, students at BCM Temple are able to serve a diverse population and be exposed to the full spectrum of medical care. The campus also has established GME programs which have been training residents and fellows for over 100 years. There are more than 40 residency and fellowship programs accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education training nearly 500 active GME residents and fellows.

Job Purpose

The Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development at BCM will have broad responsibility for the administration of academic appointments, faculty affairs and faculty lifecycle services, faculty development, and selected related operations for BCM and the BCM regional campus in Temple, Tx.

The Dean will also be responsible for planning, designing, managing and administering faculty learning and development in support of the faculty at both BCM main campus in Houston, Texas and regional campus in Temple, Tx.  There will be an additional Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development at BCM-Temple.

The Associate Dean at BCM will also work in close collaboration and partnership with the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development at BCM-Temple.

This position will primarily work in Houston, Texas with some occasional travel to Temple, Texas. 


Job Duties

Stewardship for the faculty life cycle and lead programs initiatives and processes that support the BCM-T faculty

Policies and Guidelines:

  • Lead efforts to implement, manage and evaluate faculty affairs related policies, processes, and procedures (e.g., recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation, promotion, off boarding, retirement, and discipline)
  • Monitor and ensure BCM-T faculty compliance with college, state, and federal regulations, as well as institutional alignment with BCM’s mission priorities
  • Provide resources to all faculty members on Baylor’s institutional guidelines and procedures for academic promotion and tenure
  • Fostering the development, implementation, and interpretation of faculty institutional guidelines

Faculty Data:

  • Lead efforts to capture and report faculty data (e.g., annual composition data and data related to accreditation activities)
  • Providing both institutional and department-specific reports on faculty trends with respect to faculty recruitment, gender, racial/ethnic distribution, academic rank and academic progression (time in rank) and for all faculty members
  • Managing Baylor’s Faculty Database and providing internal and external reports (e.g., annual composition data and data related to accreditation activities)

Job Duties-2

Faculty Support:

  • Participate in faculty counseling and faculty grievance and appeals processes related to BCM mission areas
  • Orient and coach BCM-T faculty on faculty BCM policies, promotion, career advancement, honors and awards, faculty evaluation and professional development.
  • Provide faculty-focused assistance that fosters faculty satisfaction and engagement while allowing faculty members to thrive personally and professionally.
  • Monitor faculty engagement survey results and faculty exit reports and strategize to enhance faculty advancement and success
  • Support the BCM faculty throughout their careers as educators, scientists, health care providers and academic leaders
  • Support annual faculty evaluation process for BCM-T faculty, monitor progress, and troubleshoot
  • Development of content for website information and resources

Diversity, Inclusion and Equity:

  • Collaborate with the BCM Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity to advance BCM’s diversity priorities and to ensure that processes are in place to monitor the effectiveness of current recruitment strategies

Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications
  • MD, DO, PhD or MD PhD with academic and administrative experience as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor level
  • Five years of related experience in Faculty Affairs or Faculty Development

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Track record of effective mentoring faculty
  • Success in building, expanding and elevating programs with vision and collaborative team spirit.
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration: None required
