Assistant Dean for Graduate Student and Postdoc Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

The Assistant Dean of Graduate Student/Postdoc Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging will report to three key leaders:  the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and the Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs.

 

The Assistant Dean will develop new programs and initiatives to support the diverse graduate student and postdoc experience and promote a culture and climate of diversity, equity and inclusion among our students, postdocs, faculty, and staff.

 

 

Support of diverse graduate students and postdoctoral trainees

  • Identify, implement and assess ongoing activities in the areas of graduate student/postdoc diversity, equity and belonging
  • Develop and implement special support programs and activities to support diverse graduate students and postdocs as well as other research trainees and pathway program participants e.g. workshops on microaggressions, implicit bias, imposter syndrome, etc.
  • Recommend and implement changes to current activities and prioritize new initiatives; determine benchmarks and report outcomes
  • Lead graduate student and postdoc committees on diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Develop academic program specific events related to diversity and inclusion, including Orientation events, enrichment activities, workshops, faculty seminars as necessary

Student/postdoc and faculty mentoring

  • Work with faculty and leadership to identify and implement best mentoring practices such as CIMER (Center for the Improvement of the Mentored Experience in Research)
  • Serve as primary liaison and adviser to underrepresented graduate students and postdocs with regard to campus life, student academics, and the mentoring relationship
  • Develop and conduct surveys of various program participants and faculty mentors
  • Serve as a member of advisory teams and other student and postdoc committees when requested
  • Prepare and lead workshop (microaggressions, implicit bias, etc.) in the required Responsible Conduct of Research course as needed

Recruitment, admissions and retention

  • Identify and develop best practices in the areas of diversity graduate student and postdoc recruitment, admission and retention
  • Assist with recruitment and admissions process for special academic programs (e.g. PREP, SURP) as well as other pipeline programs
  • Work with the Graduate Admissions Committee and other faculty on issues relating to
  • diversity, equity and belonging

Academic and grant-related

  • Work with eligible students and postdocs on diversity fellowships programs and applications; assist in preparation of fellowship applications and letters of eligibility
  • Provide feedback and support for skill development for graduate student and postdoc presentations and conferences
  • For grant supported programs: participate in preparation of grant, including tables of trainees and supporting materials; participate in preparation of annual grant reports
  • Assist in preparation of training grant statistics and program descriptions
  • Apply for grants to support eligible activities

Institutional

  • Collaborate with basic science departments and relevant medical school programs on issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
  • Coordinate and integrate graduate student/postdoc activities with ongoing medical school diversity initiatives
  • Serve as graduate school/postdoc office representative to the institutional Council on Diversity and Inclusion and other institutional committees
  • Collaborate on current ongoing special outreach programs with a focus on diversity: Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), Einstein-Montefiore High School Summer Research Program (EMSHSRP) and other pipeline programs
  • Prepare and keep specific budgets for programming and other activities
  • Prepare and deliver periodic reports and updates as requested by the Associate Deans and other institutional leaders
  • Represent the Associate Deans and the interest of graduate students and postdocs on various internal and external committees, as needed
  • Participate in various institutional committees and task forces as required or as requested
  • Participate in regional and national committees and initiatives on graduate student and postdoc diversity


 

Master’s degree with 5-7 years’ experience required.  PhD preferred. 

Experience in working with students, faculty and administrators in promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives. 

Knowledge of educational pathways, doctoral degree training programs and academic operations.  Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
