Job Description


The Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration is the chief financial officer for the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (CLAHS). Reporting to the Dean and working with other members of the College leadership team, the Assistant Dean will direct the budgetary and facility operations for the CLAHS senior management area in support of the College’s mission and values. The successful candidate will be creative and collaborative; have the ability to assess the financial viability of alternative funding opportunities; provide guidance to the College leadership team, schools, centers, and departments; and build trusting relationships within both the College and the University. The Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration must thrive in a fast-paced culture, and the successful candidate will have the skills to maintain and further develop the high-performing, inclusive financial community that exists within the College.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight for the fiscal operations of the College, including: budget development, communication, implementation, and evaluation; salary and operating budget adjustments; management of end-of-year balances and carryover; management of pooled salaries and position allocations; allocation of student assistantships and tuition payments; and oversight of contracts, grants, and their related cost-sharing commitments and overhead allocations.
  • Oversee budget allocations to constituent departments, coordinate and evaluate requests for resources, monitor mid-year and year-end balances, and assist department heads/chairs, school directors, center directors, and the Dean in addressing unit financial issues in a timely way.
  • Actively manage and strategically evaluate the College's resources, ensuring that funds are stewarded appropriately as well as allocated and deployed for maximum benefit.
  • Oversee and lead development of best practices related to: pre- and post-award grant activities, including timely submission of grant applications; developing budgets for individual grants, working closely with individual principal investigators; and working with grants management officials at granting agencies and the Office of Sponsored Programs at Virginia Tech to effect submission, award, and management of grants.
  • Establish a shared funding model for non-revenue generating research-centric centers and units.
  • Prepare long- and short-range financial goals and objectives for the College, including modeling and forecasting prospective revenues and expenditures under different assumptions and scenarios; exhibit a mastery of the Virginia Tech Partnership for an Incentive Based Budget (PIBB) financial model.
  • Develop and implement College-wide business administration policies and best practices in consultation with departmental administrators as needed.
  • Assist the Dean and Associate Deans in management analysis and planning for a variety of single issue and ongoing projects.
  • Supervise the fiscal support staff in the Dean's office.
  • Review and recommend operational efficiencies and improvements in all functional areas of the senior management area, and provide consultation to constituent departments regarding assessment activities.
  • Serve as liaison to Capital Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities (CPIF) regarding capital projects, building/ facility improvements, and lease agreements.
  • Manage the College’s space allocations, renovations, and internal relocations.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field as well as substantial budgeting and accounting experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of principles of financial, budget, and business operations planning and control as well as significant experience in finance and administration in higher education, including experience managing multi-million-dollar budgets.
  • Understanding of Sponsored Program best practices in relation to pre- and post-award management.
  • Demonstrated experience providing analyses, projections, and recommendations in matters of finance and budget, management, operations, and planning.
  • Advanced spreadsheet and data management software skills.
  • Demonstrated ability managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and adapting to changing priorities and needs.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, strategic planning, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including effective writing and communication skills; the ability to analyze, summarize, and present financial information clearly; and the ability to interpret, apply, and communicate management and personnel policies accurately and effectively.
  • Working knowledge of state and federal compliance policies as well as human resources procedures.

Preferred Qualifications


  • An advanced degree in business administration, accounting, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Virginia Tech financial and personnel policies and procedures and their related enterprise systems.
