Position Overview

The incumbent reports to the Lied Center Associate Director, and supervises custodial staff at the Lied Center for Performing Arts who perform daily cleaning activities in offices, lobbies, meeting spaces, public and private reception areas, and performance spaces.  The custodial staff also sets up and takes down tables and chairs and other equipment in various spaces as needed based on event needs and performs light maintenance tasks when requested.  The incumbent is responsible for planning and directing the daily work activities of the custodial staff.  The incumbent is also responsible for providing appropriate skills-related training, and for physically completing custodial work as required.  The incumbent must be able to work a flexible schedule which is dictated by the performance schedule for the Lied Center and will include evenings and weekends.

Job Description

40% Custodial Duties: Performs daily custodial work in assigned areas as a member of the custodial team, maintaining cleaning levels at established standards. This may include vacuuming, dry and wet mopping, stripping, and burnishing floors, emptying trash; cleaning, dusting, and polishing surfaces; cleaning and disinfecting sinks, stools all areas and fixtures in bathrooms, including sinks, stools, urinals, sanitary napkin receptacles and shower stalls.  Checks and cleans entrances and exterior areas of buildings which will include removing ice and snow.

35% Custodial Services Supervision: Plans and directs and evaluates work of subordinate custodians. Incumbent provides direct and daily supervision to review staff progress, determines effectiveness, training needs, and proper cleaning methods. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that established work schedules are followed, including daily review and inspection of assigned facilities. Provides daily quality inspections and ensures follow-up occurs to remedy any identified deficiencies.  Incumbent is responsible for recommending new hires when vacancies occur and ensure effective staffing and use of resources. The incumbent also develops and implements procedures for the effective use of time, equipment, and labor relative to daily work activities and support for future assignments. Establishes work schedules based on the needs of the Lied Center.   Recognizes and reports facility maintenance needs to Facilities Services and/or Lied Center Associate Director as directed.  Interfaces with and assists Lied Center staff and other building users in event planning and execution.

15%  Reviews and approves time worked and Absence Requests in HRPay.  Monitors attendance and performance of subordinates.  Consults with Campus Operations HR to address concerns regarding attendance or conduct.  Meets periodically with Facility Services Maintenance Manager for Custodial Supervisor to stay abreast of Custodial Services policies and practices.

10% Conducts regular staff meetings To discuss schedules and assignments, use and care of equipment, staff development and training needs, and appropriate response to unique or unusual situations as they arise. Participates in training sessions and in-service classes or workshops.  Attends regular Lied Center staff meetings.  Interfaces with Lied Center event staff about setup needs for events.  Other duties as assigned.


Position Requirements

1. Ability to lift and carry at least 30 pounds with or without accommodation.
2. Ability to work under a variety of extremes of temperature and weather, both inside and outdoors.
3. Willingness and ability to work overtime as needed.
4. Willingness and ability to respond to after-hour s emergencies as needed.
5. Willingness and ability to work a flexible work schedule including nights and weekends.


Required Qualifications

1. High School diploma or completion of G.E.D. equivalency
2. At least three years of custodial experience
3. At least one year of any supervisor/leadership experience


Preferred Qualifications

1. Custodial experience in a large commercial or institutional setting.
3. Three years of supervisory/leadership experience.
4. Three years of custodial experience in an event-driven environment such as a theater or conference center.
5. Effective oral and written communication skills as evidenced by interview and application materials.
6. Ability to effectively use office software applications including Word, Outlook and HR/Pay.
