Position Overview

Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds. The Assistant Custodial Supervisor reports directly to the Supervisor of Custodial Services. This position assists in supervising custodial staff who perform daily cleaning activities in office, classroom, research, and/or residential buildings. The incumbent is responsible for delegating work from the Supervisor of Custodial Services and directing work activities of the custodial staff. The incumbent is also responsible for providing appropriate skills, equipment, and safety training. In addition, the Assistant Custodial Supervisor is responsible for performing cleaning activities as a custodial team member.

Job Description

45% Custodial Services Supervision: Assists in the planning and direction of the work of subordinate custodians. Provides direct and daily supervision to ensure overall cleanliness meets established standards. Tracks staff progress with daily workload, determine effectiveness, training needs, proper cleaning methods, reports progress to Supervisor on a regular basis – the frequency to be determined by the Supervisor. Assist in ensuring that established work schedules and procedures are followed, including daily review and inspection of assigned facilities. In conjunction with the Custodial Supervisor, meets with staff to discuss schedules and assignments, use and care of equipment, staff development and training needs, and appropriate response to unique or unusual situations as they arise. Assists in providing daily quality inspections of the zone and ensures timely follow-up occurs to remedy any identified deficiencies. Develops and implements procedures for the effective use of time, equipment, and labor relative to daily work activities and support for future assignments. Establishes work schedules and assists the Custodial Supervisor in evaluating the work/performance of subordinates. Communicates daily with custodial staff.

40% - Custodial Duties: Performs daily custodial work in assigned areas as a member of the custodial team, maintaining cleaning levels at established standards. This may include vacuuming, dry and wet mopping, stripping, and burnishing floors, emptying trash; cleaning, dusting, and polishing surfaces; cleaning and disinfecting sinks, stools all areas and fixtures in bathrooms, including sinks, stools, urinals, sanitary napkin receptacles and shower stalls. Checks and cleans entrances and exterior areas of buildings which will include removing ice and snow.

5% - Management Reports and Administration: In conjunction with the Custodial Supervisor, maintains and reviews time, labor, and absence management reports, approves leave requests, and monitors leave balances for assigned staff.

5% - Related Duties: In the absence of Custodial Supervisor, assumes responsibility for meeting requirements outlined in any service level agreements that may exist with customers and assigns custodial work to staff. May be responsible for additional custodial services in the absence of colleagues or immediate supervisor. Assists with snow removal and surface treatment.

5% - Performs other related work as assigned.


Position Requirements

  • Carry up to 30 pounds constantly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with or without accommodation.
  • Work under a variety of extremes of temperature and weather, both inside and outdoors.
  • Work overtime as needed.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather if required.

  • Required Qualifications


  • High School diploma or completion of G.E.D. equivalency.
  • At least three (3) years of custodial experience.
  •  Lead worker or supervisory experience OR a KU leadership course (STEP, Aspiring Leaders, etc.)

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous custodial supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience in a college/university setting.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the operation, use, and care of vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
  • Experience interacting with customers and/or the public.
  • Computer knowledge and skills sufficient to work in Microsoft Office Suite and various other software programs such as People Soft and MAXIMO.
