Position Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity is responsible for the coordination and development of student services and building the inclusive excellence of SDSU's staff and faculty at San Diego State University.  Departments include, but are not limited to, Assistant Deans for Student Affairs; Career Services; Center for Educational Partnerships, Outreach, and Success; Communications Services; Counseling and Psychological Services; Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs; Financial Aid and Scholarships; Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center; New Student and Parent Programs; Office of the Student Ombudsman; Residential Education; Resource Management; Student Ability Success Center; 

Student Health Services; Student Life and Leadership; Student Rights and Responsibilities; Testing Services Office; Well-being & Health Promotion; Cultural Centers; and programming related to Inclusive Excellence.      

Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity  

The Division works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations, and organizational structures while facilitating an integrated vision and shared responsibility for prioritizing and advancing institutional goals. Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Undocumented Resource Center, the incumbent will provide both student support and administrative program coordination for the Undocumented Resource Center.  Individuals within the Student Services Professional IA classification is deemed to be in a trainee level and will receive ongoing training in the following areas:  

  • Program Administration and Evaluation.

  • Entry Level Student Counseling 

  • Program Development and Outreach.  

  • The Assistant Coordinator supports innovative efforts to provide an integrated approach to identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating programs and practices directed toward improving student outreach and yield, academic success, leadership and professional development, inclusion and retention, and enrichment of the overall student experience, particularly for undocumented students. The Assistant Coordinator of the URC collaborates with the Division of Student Affairs, Division of Academic Affairs, the Division of Diversity and Innovation, students, staff, and campus/community partners to implement training, programs, and services of the Center.  

    This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students, and a resource to other faculty/staff positions on campus. This position will work with interns and student assistants to design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students, and University employees to promote leadership development, equity, multicultural education, social equality, and to address the intersectionality of identities such as gender, race, religion, ethnicity, class, and ability.  This position will promote the Undocumented Resource Center and raise awareness of undocumented student excellence and student concerns through supporting events/programs, written materials, and representation on campus-wide committees.

    This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, temporary position anticipated to end 12 months from the date of hire with the possibility of appointment to a Student Services Professional IB at the end of the training period.  This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

    The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

    Education and Experience

    Education:
    Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, Liberal Studies, or a job-related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

    • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice.

    Specialized Skills 

    • Ability to develop and deliver training and education workshops.

    • Documented experience developing and coordinating programs and events. 

    • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of undocumented students. 

    • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.

    • Interpersonal skills are necessary to interact with key senior management, faculty, and administrators regarding issues that impact the undocumented community.

    • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.

    • Ability to assess, design, implement and evaluate effective programming and policies as related to this position.

    • Ability to effectively administer and coordinate a variety of concurrent and ongoing activities.

    • Ability to interact professionally, effectively, and collaborate with diverse constituencies.

    • Ability to recruit, train, and support students for work in the Center and for advocacy work on campus

    Compensation and Benefits

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,513 per month.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,513 - $4,298 per month.

    SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy 

    In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus.  Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward, a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.  

    The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
