Assistant Chief Water & Sewer Treatment Plant Operator- Level I

Under the Management and Supervision of the Buildings and Grounds Department, the Assistant Chief Water & Sewer Treatment Plant Operator, is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and system supervision of all aspects of Grade 2 Sewer Treatment, Surface Water Treatment Plant, and site water treatment, water feature support services and the operation and maintenance of the College swimming pool. The Assistant Chief Water & Sewer Treatment Plant Operator is a full-time, non-exempt, benefit eligible position.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Operated and maintains RBC’s, clarifiers, filters, valves, tanks, chemical feed equipment, pumps PLC and SCADA systems
  • Ensures final sewer effluent quality meets or exceeds EPA and New York State Department of Health standards. Performs sampling and testing as required to ensure compliance
  • Ensures finished water quality meets or exceeds EPA and New York State Department of Health Standards. Performs sampling, testing, and laboratory work as required to ensure compliance
  • Maintains sanitary cleanliness of work areas within the treatment plants and associated equipment rooms and related facilities
  • Performs all required maintenance on water features including ensuring the proper water quality and chemistry
  • Operates and maintains the water distribution system including, but not limited to, system valves, hydrants, and backflow devices
  • Maintains records including graphs/charts, meter readings, and test results. Provides monthly water treatment and testing reports to the department
  • Operates and makes use of required mechanical equipment relating to and in performance of specific duties
  • Operate vehicles for the purpose of transportation of materials and equipment in the performance of duties
  • Maintains chemical and spare parts inventory. Retains necessary records for the acquisition and the inventory of materials as required
  • Assist other trades for the harmonious and expeditious completion of specific assignments
  • Report specific deficiencies and unsafe conditions
  • Must have own hand tools to perform duties as required
  • Perform other related work as assigned and work overtime as required
  • Conform to the safety and efficiency standards established by Bard College
Qualifications
  • Must be a high school graduate of the equivalent
  • NYSDOH license requirements: IIA Sewer Operators Certification, IIA-SW/GUI Filtration Plant, D-Distribution System and Backflow Device Test Certification
  • Knowledge of EPA and New York State Department of Health standards, current codes, and regulations
  • Must be proficient with computers and SCADA programs. Possesses good communication, interpersonal, and comprehension skills
  • Lift equipment certification desirable, or willingness to pursue
  • Must have valid NY State driver’s license
Physical Conditions
  • Requires normal vision range, hearing, the ability to see color, and ability to distinguish letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Requires ability to use and carry job related tools and equipment
  • Manual dexterity to operate job related tools and equipment
  • Requires the physical ability to stand and walk for duration of the day
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching above your head
  • Requires climbing ladders and stairs
  • Requires lifting, transporting, pushing, pulling, and maneuvering large loads weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Requires hand/eye coordination and depth perception

Compensation: $36.05/hour (.75¢ probationary adjustment for 90 days)
This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.
