Job Summary:
The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for all duties performed by building engineers, which includes operating, installing, maintaining, and repairing building equipment and systems. In addition, this role is responsible for advanced installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of building equipment including electrical and refrigeration equipment. This position will work hand in hand with the Chief Engineer and assist with training and managing the building engineers, as well as acting as Chief in the Chief’s absence. All work is to be performed in accordance with University standards and procedures for University buildings and properties. To achieve success in the Assistant Chief role, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Responsibilities:
- Gives hands-on instruction in basic maintenance and trouble-shooting procedures, as well as assists the Chief Engineer in training and supervision aimed at expanding the capabilities of the engineering team.
- Undertakes training related to job duties as deemed necessary by University, direct supervisor or management staff.
- Recommends enrollment in relevant inside or outside courses as is permissible within the guidelines of the operating budget.
- Helps introduce new employees to shop protocol, procedures and campus applications and equipment. Keeps working areas, and mechanical rooms, neat, clean and safe.
- Wears and/or uses appropriate safety equipment.
- Demonstrates the proper use and care of tools and instruments. Maintains inventory of adequate supplies and tools and orders necessary materials to complete all tasks. Uses appropriate tools and equipment.
- Responsible for advance training and notification to all contractors so that they are informed and knowledgeable with respects to the building’s critical functions and the work they are to perform, including an incident contact response list.
- Responsible for implementing emergency procedures for the engineering team.
- Understands the engineering design and operational aspects of each building system.
- Immediately recognizes and communicates to the Chief Engineer, system shortcomings as they occur including monitoring of building system capability to various base building and Facility needs.
- Helps to devise technical enhancements which will improve aspects of building operations.
- Assists in identifying equipment, which may require replacement or reconditioning resulting in the need for capital.
- Assists in creating purchasing specifications and competitive bid analysis and monitoring the quality and pricing of maintenance work performed by outside contractors including insuring the timely performance of maintenance contracts.
- Assists the Chief Engineer in the formulation and implementation of the preventive maintenance program including scheduling of preventive maintenance with minimum disruption to building daily operations.
- Assists the Chief Engineer in the organization and management of all administrative functions related to the engineering department including compliance with all applicable national and local codes and regulations, energy consumption, and department productivity.
- Maintains all infrastructure documentation for the building including up-to-date building drawings and single-lines as well as documentation mandated for the purpose of maintaining regulatory compliance with federal, state or local law.
- Responsible for site safety, including the issuance, inventory and compliance control of Personal Protective Equipment, consistent with OSHA regulations.
- Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems; repairs and replaces pipes, gauges, valves, pressure regulators, plumbing-sinks, faucets, toilets and related equipment.
- Installs and verifies operation of basic HVAC and refrigeration systems; repairs and replaces various components of related equipment.
- Verifies operation of basic electrical and lighting systems; repair and replace electrical-circuit breakers, light switches, outlets including (GFCI,) light bulb and ballast/driver changes, and various related equipment.
- Requisitions materials and supplies using in-house procedures as needed.
- Develops work schedules as requested
- Uses computers to enter and access job related information.
- Provides engineering support for capital projects when needed.
- Available to respond quickly to alarms and emergency situations during shift and after hours, summoning additional assistance as needed.
- Assists with providing engineering coverage for events, when needed or requested.
- Performs related job duties as may be assigned.

Additional Requirements
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or an equivalent combination of position-related education and experience required.
- Advanced job-related training program in air conditioning and refrigeration required.
- Completion of HVAC apprenticeship program preferred.
- Completion of job-related associate’s degree (AA) preferred.
Experience:
- At least seven years of related experience.
- Refrigerant recovery experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Current valid driver's license, other licenses or certificates needed for this position as required by law required.
- EPA Universal Certification.
- City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License.
- Membership in the IUOE Local 399 is required within 60 days of employment start date.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to access computer programs and use or learn basic computer operations related to position requirements.
- Install and verify operation of basic HVAC and refrigeration systems, repair and replace various components of related equipment.
- Install and verify operation of basic electrical and lighting systems; repair and replace electrical-circuit breakers, light switches, outlets including (GFCI,) light bulb and ballast/driver changes, and various related equipment.
- Basic knowledge of commercial building electrical distribution required. Specifically 480/277v and 208/120v distribution.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity and physically capable of strenuous activity over extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and move loads appropriate to job requirements and bend and work in a kneeling position for periods of time.
- Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, working at heights as required, enter and work within tight spaces, and withstand hot and cold temperatures.
- Must be able to work independently.
Pay Rate:
- $48.28 per hour.
