Major Duties

Under general supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, Director of Athletics and Team Physicians, the Assistant Athletic Trainer assists in the operation of the Sports Medicine Department within the Intercollegiate Athletics Department.  The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of screening, prevention and care of sports related injuries and conditions. 

  • Assists in coverage of athletic practices and contests, including evening and weekend assignments. 
  • Assists in all aspects of prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for approximately 370 student-athletes.
  • Develop and administer rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements for Athletic Trainers.
  • Current NATABOC Certification; Current First Aid and CPR w/ AED Certifications.
  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field, preferred. 
  • Two (2) years experience (as certified athletic trainer) in Intercollegiate Athletics, Division I preferred. Athletic training experience with both women’s and men’s team are preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • General knowledge of: the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment. We encourage collaboration with physicians, specialists, dietitians, allied healthcare and mental health professionals for student-athlete-centered comprehensive care.
  • Knowledge of: rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses’ governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.
  • Ability to: effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; recognize life-threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities. Must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
  • Classification / grade: 8180 / Athletic Trainer I / 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE:  $4375 - $4706 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $4012 - $7743 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday; may include evenings and weekends.
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
