Assistant/Associate Tenure-Track (Biostatistics)

The Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh is inviting applications for multiple tenure-track/tenured positions in the rank of assistant or associate professor, beginning in fall 2024 or earlier. The department is actively expanding its proficiency in the field of health data science, with emphasis on areas including machine learning, precision health, mobile health, electronic health records, statistical genetics/genomics, network analysis, imaging data, causal inference, large-scale observational studies, and spatiotemporal statistics as applied to environmental health. Exceptional candidates with other research focuses will also be considered. We are seeking applicants with a Ph.D. degree or equivalent degree in biostatistics, statistics, data science, computer science, bioinformatics, or other related quantitative disciplines. Both recent Ph.D. graduates and postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in both methodological and collaborative applied research, participate in teaching activities, and offer mentorship to students. We anticipate the faculty to cultivate significant collaborations with one of three programs: the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (https://www.orthonet.pitt.edu/ ), the Department of Pediatrics (https://www.pediatrics.pitt.edu/ ), or the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (https://www.cherp.research.va.gov/ ). In addition to these three areas, potential collaborative opportunities may also extend within and beyond the School of Public Health. Candidates for the Associate Professor position should have a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications, demonstrate success in obtaining and managing externally sponsored research, and have experience teaching biostatistics and/or mentoring students. 

Founded in 1949 as one of the original departments of the School of Public Health, the Department of Biostatistics currently consists of 19 primary and 23 secondary faculty members. Our faculty possess methodological expertise in numerous traditional and cutting-edge areas such as bioinformatics, causal inference, clinical trials, environmental statistics, missing data, meta-analysis, longitudinal and clustered data, ROC analysis, statistical genetics, genomics, statistical machine learning, high-dimensional data analysis, personalized treatment decision rules, stochastic processes, and survival analysis.

We have established strong collaborative relationships with many academic and clinical units within the School of Public Health and the School of Medicine. Moreover, the department is home to prominent research centers, including NRG Oncology Statistics and Data Management Center, and the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Biostatistics Core. These centers lead significant research efforts into chronic diseases, covering areas such as cancer, mental health, liver diseases, and health problems specific to urban and industrial settings. Beyond the university, the department also collaborates with UPMC—Pennsylvania’s largest academic medical center, as well as private sectors, and local and state government agencies.

We are deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of biostatisticians and health data scientists. Our thriving academic programs currently include approximately 40 fully funded PhD students and 30 MS students. Our alumni have secured esteemed positions at major academic institutions, government agencies, and leading industries.
