Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa invites candidates to apply for a term faculty teaching position at the Assistant or Associate rank, depending on relevant experience. Responsibilities include large in-person introductory and physical chemistry courses with an option of analytical courses; course assignments may evolve over time. The initial teaching assignment is two courses per semester and service work within the department, which may focus on issues of teaching assistants’ management or undergraduate affairs, as well as other parts of the life of the department and college. The successful candidate will have excellent teaching and communications skills and provide an effective and welcoming learning experience for students with diverse backgrounds. Teaching faculty are fully integrated into the department with voting rights on most matters.

This is a 9-month position with an initial 3-year term. This position has the possibility of renewal, contingent upon budget and department staffing needs and following a successful departmental review. Opportunities for teaching online summer school courses are also possible.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant Teaching Professor:

• MS in chemistry or a closely related area

• Teaching experience at the university level

Associate Teaching Professor:

• MS in chemistry or a closely related area

• A minimum of 5 years of directly relevant university teaching experience after receipt of the graduate degree

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD in chemistry or closely related field held by the time of employment

• Teaching experience as the instructor of record in chemistry at the university level

• Experience in the management of teaching assistants

• Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach and help revise online courses

• Demonstrated Excellent communication skills
