- Description
- The College Paul Smith’s College is a small, private institution located on a 170-acre campus adjacent to Lower St. Regis Lake in the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park of northern New York State. In addition, the college owns 14,400 acres of adjacent lands composed of forest and lakes. The College is committed to providing all students with an outstanding undergraduate and graduate experience through engaged teaching, experiential learning, and personal attention. Three of the academic departments (Natural Science, Forestry, and Environment & Society) prepare students for careers in natural resources. In addition to bachelor’s degrees in natural resources, the college also confers a low residency master’s degree in Natural Resource Conservation. The Natural Science department comprises 8 full-time faculty. Courses provide extensive “hands-on” laboratory and field experience. Position Summary: Paul Smith’s College invites applicants for a full-time faculty appointment as Assistant/Associate Professor of Wildlife Biology/Ecology. Depending on application pool and budget there may be multiple positions. The positions start in fall of 2022 and will primarily support our baccalaureate degrees in Fisheries & Wildlife Science (FWS), Environmental Science, Biology (organismal focus), and Ecological Restoration. Students may also be pursuing degrees in Natural Resource Conservation Management, Forestry, or other science degrees. Assistant/Associate Professor Wildlife Biology/Ecology: The successful candidate may teach Intro to Fisheries and Wildlife Management (for FWS majors), Intro to Wildlife Management (for non-FWS majors), Techniques in Wildlife Management, or a senior level Wildlife Management capstone course. The candidate may also teach Ornithology, Herpetology, other biology courses (such as General Biology and Anatomy), or ecology (including applied ecology) courses. Generally, the professor teaches the lecture and labs for these courses. The final teaching assignment depends on the candidate’s qualifications. Teaching may include developing online courses and teaching senior capstone courses. Other expectations include serving the college such as on committees and advising students, collaborating with other natural resource faculty, leading undergraduate research, and engaging in outreach. Research and outreach is facilitated by the fact that the college is the only baccalaureate granting institution within the 6 million acre Adirondack Park and is in immediate proximity to a diversity of ecosystems and land use designations.
- Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications The ideal candidate will have training and experience in biology or ecology, a strong interest in teaching at the undergraduate level where faculty provide personal guidance to undergraduate students, the capacity to teach a variety of courses, proven research ability in natural resources, interested in pursuing research applicable to the Adirondack region, and demonstrated record of professional involvement with his/her community. Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in facilitating career success of students through developmental advising and participation in professional societies. Therefore, candidates for this position must have (1) a Ph.D. in the natural resources or a related field, (2) documentation of effectively providing personalized, experiential learning at the undergraduate level, (3) a record of productive research, and (4) a record of community outreach within his/her field. Preferred qualifications: Paul Smith’s College particularly seeks candidates who have experience teaching at a small liberal arts college and have successfully delivered introductory and advanced courses in wildlife biology/ecology. Candidates should have the capacity and interest to develop and teach courses using learning management systems such as Canvas. Background in botany, mycology, forestry, and human dimension in natural resources can a benefit.
