Description of Work
The School of Computing (SoC) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) is going through a strategic expansion and invites applications for one tenure-track/tenured faculty position at assistant or associate professor rank to begin Fall 2024. We seek candidates who can establish a strong scholarly research and teaching program in all aspects of computing. Areas of interest include but are not limited to Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems, Robotics, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Quantum Computing.
SoC is undergoing an exciting period of significant growth. The School recently hired 15 tenured/tenure-track faculty, including 10 from 2019 to 2023, with plans to continue expansion in the near future.
SoC is a leader in the Internet of Things (IoT) and Agricultural IoT (Ag-IoT). The School is leading the Nebraska IoT Initiative, a public-private partnership between the University of Nebraska, the City of Lincoln, and a consortium of industry partners. UNL and the City of Lincoln have partnered on major infrastructure initiatives, including a remotely accessible city-wide wireless testbed, which led to the establishment of an interlocal agency, iLNK, to bring IoT investments under a common umbrella.
The NIMBUS lab at SoC is a leader in leveraging Unmanned Aircraft Systems to interact in a field environment with numerous scientific and agricultural application areas. NIMBUS’ leadership and success have been built on the intersection of field robotics, control, human-robot interaction, and software engineering. UNL is taking a lead role in a $25 million federal award that will establish a Heartland Robotics Cluster and serve as an economic driver for Nebraska.
SoC is strengthening research in Data Science, Informatics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and related areas, which are ubiquitous in domains and applications spanning UNL. UNL is establishing a new Data Science undergraduate major. The School aims to develop top programs in transformative technologies for human health, agriculture, biocomputing, and robotics, building upon the School’s existing strengths in Informatics, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning.
SoC is leading a Cybersecurity Initiative to develop a top research program to address unprecedented security challenges, including user privacy, data confidentiality, and critical infrastructure availability, and leverage domain-specific expertise and domain-agnostic techniques such as traffic analysis, anomaly detection (based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques), emergency alert mechanisms, and intelligent firewalls.
SoC has been a leader in the areas of Empirical Software Engineering, Testing, and Formal Methods. The School will continue to add outstanding scholars to strengthen foundational expertise and broaden our research portfolio to include emerging areas such as Mining Software Repository, Software Security, Human-centric Software Engineering, and Validation and Verification of Complex Software Systems such as Machine Intelligence and Cyber-physical Systems.
UNL is Nebraska’s land-grant research university and ranks among Doctoral Universities with the Highest Research Activity [Carnegie CIHE]. UNL is centered in the flourishing community of Lincoln, the third-largest city in the Big Ten.
