Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Theatre Design and Production Department (TDP) seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor for a tenure track faculty appointment in Scenic Design to begin in August 2022. Rank and salary will be commensurate with credentials within college guidelines. Initial appointment is three years and faculty member is then eligible for reappointment. TDP is comprised of approximately 160 students in BFA and MFA programs, 11 full time faculty, and 9 staff.  Collaborating with other performance-based departments, a 16-show season is produced comprised of musicals, dramas, dance, opera, and events.  


Essential Functions

The successful candidate will serve as an integral member of the Theatre Design and Production Department and will teach courses to both undergraduate and graduate students in scenic design, as well as other students as applicable. They will mentor students’ production work and teach courses in beginning and advanced drafting and digital visualization. Additionally, there may be an opportunity to teach introductory and advanced courses in scenic design and scenic design research or special topics based on the applicant’s special areas of expertise. This position requires active departmental participation, including curriculum development, recruitment, student advising, season planning and collaboration with the scene shop staff. This position will design a minimum of one departmental production each academic year, in addition to advising student designers on their own productions. Contributions to the discipline through creative work or published research, professional lectures, or presentations are required.  All tenure-track faculty must actively pursue professional development within their field in order to maintain their fluency with current industry practice, advance their pedagogy and support student opportunities within the industry.  Contributions to the College or University through committee participation are also required.  


Minimum Requirements

Prior to the effective date of the appointment, the successful candidate must have either:   
1. a Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design or related field in addition to five years of professional scenic design experience  
OR  
2. a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Production or related field along with eight years of work experience in scenic design for the professional theatre or live entertainment industry demonstrating increasing responsibility and achievement.
