Position Overview
The Linguistics Department at the University of Kansas invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Phonetics, expected to begin August 18, 2023.This position is a full-time, academic-year appointment.
A Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely related field with a specialization in an area of Phonetics is expected by the start date of appointment. The successful candidate will have a strong record of research which is informed by linguistic theory, demonstrate excellence in teaching, and show potential for or evidence of securing funding. The successful candidate will contribute original research and high-quality teaching in Phonetics or one of the interfaces of Phonetics with other disciplines, such as Second Language Acquisition or Sociolinguistics.
Responsibilities will include maintaining an active research program, supervising graduate and undergraduate research, teaching courses in phonetics, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and other courses in linguistics, and contributing to departmental governance. We seek applicants whose interests and expertise intersect with existing research in the department.

Job Description
40% Teaching
- Responsibilities include teaching two courses per semester, including courses in Phonetics, Second Language Acquisition, or Sociolinguistics at the undergraduate and graduate level, advanced seminars in research area, and additional courses as appropriate to the candidate’s qualifications; develop syllabi and prepare lectures; create, administer, and grade exams; hold regular office hours.
- Supervise graduate and undergraduate student research (thesis and dissertation); participate in graduate and undergraduate student committees as appropriate.
40% Research
- Conduct research within area of specialization and establish a research agenda as demonstrated by scholarly publications and presentations.
20% Service
- Faculty members are expected to participate in departmental events and perform service to the Department, College, University, and to the profession at large.

Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Linguistics or closely related field (expected by the start date of the appointment), with a specialization in Phonetics, Phonetics and Second Language Acquisition or Sociophonetics.
- A strong record of research in one or more of the areas above, informed by linguistic theory, as evidenced by resume, research interests, or work history.
- Potential for excellence in teaching.
- Potential for securing funding.
- Interests and expertise that intersect with existing research in the department.
- Commitment to contribute to the climate of diversity in the College, including a diversity of scholarly approaches.
For Associate Professor level: All those stated above, plus the following:
- Proven record of teaching excellence
