About the Department
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The Department has over 90 full time faculty and staff, and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. Faculty, staff, and students work together with business, industry, government, community groups, and non-government organizations to address a wide range of challenges facing our state and the world. Partnerships include Camcore, the Forest Productivity Cooperative (FPC), the Southern Forest Resource Assessment Consortium (SOFAC), and the Tree Improvement Program (TIP). Essential Job Duties
Primary Purpose of Position:
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track position in Quantitative Forest Science, including forest biometry and growth and yield modeling. The appointment is 45% research, 45% teaching, and 10% service. Applicants should have clearly demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students on a range of topics related to natural resource measurements, such as biostatistics, LiDAR and other new digital tools, and assessment of ecosystem services. Applicants should also have a clearly demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students from a wide range of backgrounds and to collaborative, interdisciplinary research.
Teaching and Mentoring Responsibilities:
The candidate will teach established courses in the forest management undergraduate curriculum, covering forest mapping, mensuration, inventory and modeling during the academic year and during the summer field course, in addition to teaching an existing or new course that serves as an analytical or quantitative elective in Forestry and Environmental Resources. The candidate will be expected to teach or co-teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and will be responsible for advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in the department.
Research Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized, collaborative, and externally-funded research program, including potential collaboration with the three forest industry cooperatives (Tree Improvement, Forest Productivity, Camcore) and the Southern Forest Resource Assessment Consortium (SOFAC).
Service Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to serve on academic committees (at the department, college, and university levels); engage with students through clubs, undergraduate research, or other extracurricular activities; and participate in professional society activities.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Doctoral degree in forestry or other natural resources related field.
Other Required Qualifications
  • A proven track record of research including peer-reviewed publications;
  • Demonstrated experience or potential to attract external funding;
  • Demonstrated experience and desire to teach and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Excellent problem-solving and oral and written communication skills;
  • Desire to collaborate in teaching, research, and service missions of NC State.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years of post-doctoral experience;
  • Education or experience in forest/natural resource biostatistics, biometry, mensuration, remote sensing, and/or spatial analysis.
