Department Summary
The Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation has over 1,300 students and offers a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Kinesiology and a PhD in Human Performance and Movement Science. Graduate students can specialize their training across several areas including sport pedagogy & motor behavior, exercise physiology, and human performance psychology. Current research laboratories include the Pediatric Movement and Physical Activity Laboratory, Disability & Movement Research Collective, Applied Physiology Laboratory, Sport and Exercise Psychophysiology Laboratory, Sport Physical Activity and Health Laboratory, and Physical Activity and Psychomotor Learning Laboratory. The Sport Pedagogy and Motor Behavior unit has two primary research units: the Pediatric Movement and Physical Activity Laboratory, directed by Dr. Tao Zhang, focuses on the research and development of innovative approaches to P-12 physical activity/education to help school-aged children develop health-related knowledge and skills; and the Disability & Movement Research Collective, directed by Dr. Andrew M. Colombo-Dougovito, is a community-informed research laboratory dedicated to: (a) identifying systemic barriers to wellbeing experienced by disabled people and their families throughout their lives; and (2) finding transformative solutions to address inequities in access to physical activity and sport.

Position Summary
The Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation at the University of North Texas invites applicants for a tenure-track/tenured position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, with expertise in physical activity implementation with a focus on health disparities and physical activity promotion in school or community settings among underserved populations. Position will begin Fall 2024. It is preferred for the successful candidate to demonstrate an ability to build and sustain community partnership. It is expected that the applicant will be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the department’s sport pedagogy, motor behavior/development, or related curriculum, as well as have an active and focused research agenda with a potential for obtaining external grant or industry funding in physical activity and health disparities. The successful applicant will be able to collaborate with, complement, and expand the ongoing research within the sport pedagogy and motor behavior/development area as well as across the department. Applicants, in addition to their scholarship, will be expected to teach two organized courses in each of the long semesters (2:2) and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Experience with teaching online and hybrid courses using Canvas or a similar learning management system is desirable. Service roles within the department, college, university, and profession are expected. This may include serving an advisory role in mentored, practical or research experiences, being involved in theses, dissertations, and culminating projects, and serving in committee, curriculum, and coordinator roles.
Minimum Qualifications
  • All applicants must have an earned doctorate (PhD or equivalent) in Kinesiology, Motor Development/Behavior, Implementation Science, Physical Activity and Health/Wellness, Behavioral Science or closely related field at the time of appointment to be considered.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a potential for developing an extramurally funded research profile, show evidence of teaching at university level, and demonstrate commitment to working with diverse student populations.
  • Candidates that are ABD will be considered at the Assistant rank.
  • Candidates vying for the rank of Associate must hold a similar rank or higher at their current institution or have relevant equivalent industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications
At the Assistant rank, candidates with preferred qualifications will have:
  • Post-doc or prior experience in a faculty position;
  • A record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals or disseminating research to academic audiences in health disparities and physical activity promotion in school or community settings;
  • Demonstrated collegiate teaching experience in developing and delivering in-person, online, and hybrid courses to diverse student populations;
  • Potential for successful extramural funding in health disparities and physical activity promotion in school or community settings.

At the Associate rank, candidates with preferred qualifications will additionally have:
  • A national and/or international reputation of expertise in health disparities and physical activity promotion in school or community settings;
  • Demonstrated success mentoring doctoral students in sport pedagogy & motor behavior; and
  • Prior or ongoing external funding in health disparities and physical activity promotion.
