The Department of Economics at Illinois State University invites applications for one tenure-track assistant or associate professor to begin August 16, 2024. We are seeking qualified candidates in Environmental Economics, Energy Economics, and/or Regulatory Economics.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in various areas, including introductory courses in principles of microeconomics, elective courses in environmental economics and energy economics, and graduate-level courses in the Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications Economics (ENGTE) sequence.

A successful candidate will be expected to support recruitment into the economics major and supervise student research. We are particularly interested in applicants with a demonstrated interest in mentoring first-generation students and those from other traditionally under-represented groups. A successful candidate will pursue scholarly activities, including publishing in high-quality academic journals and submitting external grants (as relevant to their field), as well as provide service to the Department, College, University, profession, and community.

Candidates will have the opportunity to actively engage with the Institute for Regulatory Policy Studies (IRPS), a non-profit organization that performs research on regulatory economics and the regulated industries, organizes conferences to educate and outreach to the regulatory community in the Midwest, and supports graduate students in the Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications Economics sequence. The Institute is jointly funded by the University and membership dues from external organizations (current membership includes Ameren, Commonwealth Edison, Constellation, Illinois American Water, MISO, Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas, PJM Interconnection). The Institute provides a critical link between Illinois State University and the telecommunications, electric power, and natural gas industries, and it directly supports the graduate program through graduate assistant positions, internship placements, state-level workshops, grants for faculty-student coauthored research projects, and connecting students, academics, regulators, consumer advocates, and the industry.

The Department of Economics has built a strong reputation for scholarly work, with faculty members undertaking empirical research in their respective fields of expertise: labor economics, macroeconomics, industrial organization, economic development, applied econometrics, health economics, economics of education, international trade, and financial economics. The Department expects faculty to be actively engaged with the profession through publications in peer-reviewed academic journals and book chapters, presentations in academic conferences and in invited (external) seminars, refereeing for academic journals, and submission and receipt of competitive external grant funding. Faculty members have been consistently productive, averaging 2.5 publications, 2.3 presentations, and 7.2 referee reports per faculty per year between 2014 and 2022.

The Department offers B.A./B.S. degrees in two sequences (General Economics and Managerial Economics) and one minor in the discipline. The Department offers STEM-designated M.A./M.S. in Applied Economics degree, with five sequences; a general sequence that trains students in quantitative and applied economic skills across different fields (i.e., economic development, health economics, international economics, labor economics, public finance) and four specialized sequences in applied economics (Electricity, Natural Gas, and Telecommunications Economics; Applied Community and Economic Development; Financial Economics; Quantitative Economics).

The Department has approximately 90 undergraduate students, 40 graduate students, 9 tenure-track, and 4 non-tenure-track faculty members.

The Department hosts the Institute for Regulatory Policy Studies (IRPS), which functions administratively under an Executive Director who oversees a Director of Outreach and a Director of Research. The Department is also a co-sponsor of the Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development, which provides internships and assistantships for students in the Applied Community and Economic Development sequence.
