Position Description:

Teach two courses per year in costume design for the theatre and teach two courses per year in a related topic such as costume design for film, costume design for television/streaming, period styles, digital rendering, history of western costumes, fashion, and textiles, and/or non-Western costume design. In addition, the faculty member will co-teach the course Graduate Design Seminar each semester. Primary responsibilities include participating in a six-semester pre-professional curriculum for the MFA design program; teaching beginning and intermediate design courses for the BA degree; designing one departmental production each year; extensive mentoring of graduate design students; academic advising of undergraduate students; recruiting at U/RTA; and participating in departmental and university service responsibilities. A consistent pattern of professional creative work and/or publication each year is expected.


Appointment: August 21 2024.


Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.


General:  For over 100 years, the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts has been a pioneer in all aspects of theatrical production.  Degree programs are BA and MFA, with specializations in acting, design, directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, and stage management.  The department has a special interest in the development of new plays, and each year produces over 20 new works in its season.  Students are trained to respond to the needs of new plays and performance while grounding themselves actively and creatively in theatrical principles.  We have a newly formed Certificate in Performing Arts and Social Justice.  The certificate is offered in collaboration with Dance, Music, and Gender and Women’s Sexuality Studies.

Required Qualifications:

A strong and active record of professional artistic accomplishments in costume design


At least one semester of university level teaching experience beyond the TA level.


To be considered for the rank of Associate Professor, the required qualifications include 5 years of university level teaching experience, a record of university service, a record of professional service, and membership in USA829.

Desirable Qualifications:

One year or more of university teaching experience.


Experience teaching at the graduate level.


Membership in USA829.


A record of mentoring students.


Experience working in film, television, or professional streaming platforms.


Demonstrated experience with makeup design, wigs and hair design, costume crafts, puppetry, and/or mask making.


Experience utilizing digital rendering techniques.


Demonstrated experience working as an international designer.


Ability to lead a graduate design program.


Demonstrated experience promoting an inclusive culture in the workforce and academic environment.
