The Design School and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University seek applicants for a full-time tenured/tenure-track assistant or associate-level faculty position in the area of Architecture of Extreme Environments with a focus on innovative and resilient buildings, to begin fall 2024. This position is anticipated to be a joint appointment between The Design School in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. This position will be located on the ASU Tempe campus.

About the Architecture Program

The Architecture Program has launched a new curriculum that is designed to be inclusive, innovative, and impactful, aimed towards excellence. The program offers a professional Master of Architecture (MArch) both in-person and online, a four-year pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Design (BSD) in Architectural Studies, and a Minor in Architectural Studies. In addition, the School supports two graduate research degree programs conferring respectively a Master of Science in Architecture (MSArch) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Design, Environment, and the Arts (PhD). We offer concurrent Master’s degree options with each of the other programs in The Design School. In addition, graduate students can pursue concurrent master’s degree options across ASU. The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering is the largest engineering colleges in the United States with approximately 32,000 students.  The Ira A. About the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment

The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) is committed to preparing a twenty-first century workforce that is capable of harnessing the power of technology to engineer a smart and sustainable infrastructure future for all. The School offers undergraduate and graduate academic programs in civil engineering, construction engineering, construction management, environmental engineering, and sustainable engineering. The School is home to 60 faculty members serving 2,200 students in its various degree programs. The Del E Webb School of Construction is housed within SSEBE. Faculty are engaged in cutting edge research and discovery that amounts to more than $30 million in expenditures annually. The School houses a number of major research initiatives and centers with faculty advancing work in all infrastructure domains including structures and materials, environmental sciences and engineering, water resource systems, transportation systems, pavement technologies, sustainable engineering, and construction management and project delivery. The School has strong ties with indigenous communities through its Construction in Indian Country enterprise and seeks to advance sustainable construction and engineering solutions that serve the needs of diverse populations and geographies. 

 About the Position

We seek applicants who complement our abilities in designing, constructing, and advancing sustainable built environments that provide long-lasting improvement to the human condition and that are coherently integrated with social and natural systems. Particular areas of interest include but are not limited to: health and the built environment, building envelope optimization, novel material and construction methods, building technologies and energy systems, energy conservation and efficiency, building information modeling, industrialized construction, the use of AI in building technology and construction, and construction and design challenges inherent to extreme environments. We are particularly interested in recruiting scholars who are focused on the design of resilient and adaptive built environments, with an emphasis on empowering and advancing a community’s health, especially in environmental justice contexts. The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, develop and sustain a research program consistent with a tenure-track position, and engage in service within the institution and the profession. We are especially interested in applicants who are dedicated to advancing the ASU Charter  and realizing ASU’s Design Aspirations .
