The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (CUIN) at the University of Houston (UH) seeks scholars for a faculty appointment at the academic rank of Assistant/Associate Professor to serve our Urban Education teacher preparation, Master’s, and doctoral programs.


The University of Houston (UH) is the second most ethnically diverse major Tier-I research university in the country and is designated as a Hispanic serving and Asian serving institution. The College of Education at UH has long-standing partnerships with multiple school districts to share research and prepare highly effective teachers and educators to serve urban communities.


The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate academic programs in multiple areas of specialization. Our programs have a special focus on student success, social justice, diversity, and community engagement. We welcome candidates whose experience in research, teaching, and service demonstrate our commitment to diversity, excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration. 


Primary research responsibilities include an active research program in literacy education, seeking and acquiring external federal funding, publishing scholarly work in high-impact venues, and disseminating work to national and international audiences. Primary teaching responsibilities will include expert teaching through face-to-face, online or hybrid delivery of courses in the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. A successful candidate will also participate in course and program development, supervision of graduate student research and teaching assistants, community outreach activities, and service to the Department, College, University, and profession.


This is a nine month appointment. Review of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is August, 2019. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience and will include benefits.     Applicants must have a doctorate in reading/language arts education or related field, as well as demonstrate an active record of scholarship and external funding commensurate with experience. Experience teaching reading and language arts at the K-12 level is also expected. The applicant must provide evidence of knowledge regarding current research-based trends and cultural contexts in US schools through research work and course instruction. Candidates with an interest in literacy are particularly encouraged to apply.
