Organizational Unit Overview
The Elementary Education and Middle Grades Education department is one of six departments within the College of Education. It offers both undergraduate and graduate programs, including a Bachelor of Science K-6 licensure program and a Master of Arts in Education with a master’s level K-6 elementary teaching license. The department provides courses for candidates obtaining a residency license in North Carolina. Concentrations for the MAEd in Elementary Education include Academically and Intellectually Gifted, Early Childhood, Teacher Leadership, and Teaching Children in Poverty. Additionally, a Teaching Children in Poverty graduate certificate program and Academically Gifted add-on license are available. Faculty in the department engage in regular collaboration and leadership with the shared goal of producing quality teachers.
Job Duties
The Department of Elementary Education and Middle Grades Education at East Carolina University (ECU) is seeking applicants for one tenure-track, nine-month, full-time, elementary education faculty position. The position begins August 2024. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications. Responsibilities include teaching a variety of undergraduate and/or graduate Elementary Education courses in face-to-face, online, and/or hybrid formats; teaching residency courses; supervising practicum and/or internship experiences; building connections to local schools and collaborating within the department and across the college to strengthen course and program alignment.
Responsibilities also include engaging in scholarly research and grant-writing, presenting at conferences, and collaborating with colleagues to strengthen research-to-practice within the program; as well as engaging in appropriate professional service to the department, college, university, local schools, and to the education profession.
This position is part of a college-wide cohort of searches for the College of Education at East Carolina University (ECU), designed to connect, support, and empower incoming faculty along research interests that support the university’s mission and vision priorities .

· Sustaining an inclusive educational environment that welcomes a broad representation of persons and perspectives (e.g., recruitment and retention of all, including underrepresented groups, into educator preparation programs)
· Collaboration with community and university partners to foster comprehensive well-being and educational transformation (e.g. community school education)
· Increasing access and advancement for all learners through innovative teaching, research, and creative activities.
ECU’s College of Education trains and prepares educators to work in all environments (i.e., urban, suburban, and rural) however, many of our graduates work in rural communities in eastern North Carolina. As such, these positions are focused primarily on those interested in educating, working with, and supporting those in rural environments as well as conducting research on issues pertaining to rural education.

Minimum Education/Experience
An earned doctorate in elementary education or a related field (including but not limited to curriculum and teaching, teacher education, middle grades education, literacy education, social studies education, educational psychology or educational leadership).
Candidates must have at least three years of K-6 teaching experience. Candidates must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina teaching licensure. Candidates should have knowledge and experience with NCSCOS, edTPA, and the North Carolina teacher licensure process and requirements or similar information from other states. Candidates’ published research and research-in-progress should represent a clear research agenda and/or show promise for a clear research agenda.
Candidates with a Ph.D. or Ed.D. conferred at the time of initial appointment will hold, at minimum, the rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates may also be initially appointed with the probationary rank of Assistant Professor but must have the terminal degree conferred prior to the first reappointment. Associate Professors will be considered.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Current or eligibility for NC Teaching Licensure.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Documentation of experience teaching in higher education for face-to-face and/or online courses, along with documentation of public school teaching experience in an elementary setting, teaching in Teacher Education program(s), experience supervising pre-service students, TESOL background experience.
