SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUITY COHORT HIRE
College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP), Cornell University
The Departments of Architecture, Art, and City and Regional Planning—the three constituent units of the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University—are launching faculty searches for a cohort hire that will advance scholarship, research, and creative practice on issues of social justice, equity, and identity. The faculty cohort hire seeks to bring together a group of scholars and practitioners who are committed to a larger project of expanding our imaginaries for social change through just spatial, social, and material practices that our disciplines embrace.
AAP is a vital college in one of the nation’s foremost research universities, and has educated many influential theorists and practitioners in the fields of architecture, art, and planning in the United States. We embrace creative and analytic practices that challenge preconceptions and prejudice; encourage critical engagement with the many forms of built and creative culture; and defend the prerogative of our disciplines to ask difficult questions. AAP’s physical and academic center is on Cornell’s Ithaca campus but given the global nature of our interests and commitments, the college has extended its reach to include permanent programs in the historic center of Rome, Italy, and New York City. Each department will conduct its own search while supporting our collective college-wide goal of linking scholarship and practice to societal impact. It is expected that all faculty members brought in under the cohort hire will contribute to research, creative practice, teaching and advising in an area of inquiry that advances scholarship and practice to address social justice and equity in their departments and across the college.

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor for Social Justice and Equity Cohort Hire
Cornell University's Department of Architecture invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor or early career associate professor in architecture beginning July 1, 2022, as part of a cohort hire of faculty whose teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative practice advance topics of social justice and equity at the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.
Architecture at Cornell dates to the founding of the institution; it is one of the oldest programs of its kind and has a long and distinguished tradition of design, scholarship, and teaching. Degree programs in the Department include a professional bachelor of architecture (B.Arch.); a professional master of architecture (M.Arch.); a post-professional master of science (M.S.) in advanced architectural design; M.S. degrees in computer graphics and matter design computation; and a Ph.D. in the history of architecture and urban development. The Department of Architecture engages urgent global issues through a foundation in conceptual thinking and processes of making. We are committed to architectural practices informed by and embedded within evolving and dynamic social, environmental, and technological contexts.
We seek candidates who will foster an interdisciplinary approach to architectural design studios and seminars at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. These may be situated within spatial and critical practices, theories, and histories. Particular attention will be given to candidates concerned with marginalized peoples and communities and whose work may actively and innovatively address urgent topics such as indigeneity, racism(s) in all forms, environmental degradation and its uneven effects, migrations and displacements, comparative trans-national systems and valences of oppression found within and among territories.
A professional degree in architecture is considered a necessity for this position (five year B.Arch or an M.Arch). Responsibilities will include teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, research, advising and service. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
