Position Summary
The Department of Cariology & Operative Dentistry at the Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) in Indianapolis is seeking qualified applicants for a tenure-track faculty position. This will be a 12-month,1.0 FTE appointment at the rank of either assistant or associate professor, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2024, or sooner.

We are recruiting to our team someone with research training in microbiology of oral and systemic diseases, including cariology. Additionally, this individual will have (1) a record of ongoing scholarly activity, and (2) consistent success in obtaining extramural research funding. For this particular recruitment, our research areas of interest are in, but not limited to, microbiology /microbiome with a focus on dental microbiology/biofilm; oral microbiome in systemic diseases; or other related fields.

These abilities and characteristics are essential because the primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to advance and support the research missions of the Indiana University School of Dentistry and the department of Cariology & Operative Dentistry and develop new aligned research program(s) that are strongly sustained by independent extramural research funds. Faculty practice and other revenue- generating opportunities will be considered for eligible candidates.
We also improve the world through teaching and service. Limited didactic teaching and instruction at the pre-doctoral and graduate levels and mentoring of graduate students through their research projects is part of this position. Engagement in service at the department, school, and university levels, including participation in departmental and school governance, is expected.
IUSD offers a dynamic learning environment for faculty, in which teaching, research, clinical care, and community service are core to our mission, through clinical programs in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville, Indiana. Our main facility includes a state-of- the-art 45,000–square-foot James J. Fritts DDS Clinical Care Center on the IUPUI campus and is both adjacent to local hospitals and part of an urban academic health center. We deliver a wide range of services and outreach to more than 20,000 patients per year. We enroll approximately 800 students annually in degree and/or certificate programs in dentistry, allied dental programs, PhD, and advanced dental specialty programs tailored to current and future needs of the professions and the communities we serve. The IU School of Dentistry is the only dental school in the state and educates 80% of the dentists practicing in Indiana. Basic Qualifications

  • Either doctorate degree (PhD or equivalent) in microbiology in oral diseases or related area.
  • Early success in being awarded extramural research funding and evidence of ability for future success.

Additional Qualifications

  • A DDS/DMD or equivalent dental degree
  • A Master’s degree (or other advanced academic degrees) in the field of cariology or related area
  • A successful track record of extramural funding that includes federal research funding
  • Administrative experience

Salary and Rank Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
